HAYFIELD RESULTS MIXED, BUT JV GOES TO 3-0!

The Fastest Sport on Two Feet - or maybe OFF two feet :-) a leaping save by Kevin Hia!

The Marshall Varsity fell to the host Hayfield Hawks tonight, but the JV squad is off to a fantastic season start after an exciting comeback win. Down 1-3, the Statesman rallied past the Hawks and finished the game with a 7-5 win.

JV Game - Two goals each by Sam Mencarini and JP Baker were complemented with goals by Steven Armstrong, Buddy Stolze and Carlos Arandia. Mencarini, Armstrong and Steven White directed an unrelenting offensive attack leading to monopolization of the game in the second half.

The defense was aggressive with solid goal protection and "flashes" of offensive flair led by Chris Newcomb, Taylor Delean, Roman Polyakov and Peter Embree. First year goalie Craig Murphy stood strong in goal and displayed outstanding composure and solid protection of the goal. All in all, it was a great game and great fun to watch! Both teams worked hard, hit hard and played hard. :-)

The JV team is off to its best start in many years (3-0) and has already matched its total number of wins in 2005.

Varsity Game - The Varsity offense got on track against the Hawks - Pat Findaro and Jake Oster both put up hat-tricks, and Aria Kavyani scored a goal as well. But the #8 team in the Northern Region played a strong game out there, and eventually the Hawks came out ahead in this offensive showpiece. The final score was Hayfield 11, Marshall 7.

Update: LAXPower says Hayfield was supposed to beat us by NINE GOALS. ... I don't think we put much stock in Supposed To. :-)

On Saturday, the Statesmen Varsity are on the road again - traveling to the exact same Hayfield stadium - for a tournament game aginst Edison. B there, everyone. Marshall Pride! Go Statesmen!

The starting squads meet at center court. It's gonna be a terrific game tonight!

POW! Apparently, Marshall brought a TON of lumber tonight. And in case you're wondering, yes that's a HUGE penalty - kinds don't try this at home.

Oh, it's gonna be a physical game tonight! This one was a penalty, too. Despite the I-didn't-touch-him hands in the air pose.

OK, so these guys are big. That don't mean much to Small School Big Heart :-) Marshall Pride!

We're standing up to these guys and playing tough, hard-nosed defense. But these man-down situations are gonna catch up to us!

BALL! We're also losing a bunch of the loose ball opportunities!

It's getting hectic out here! Vinsanity tries to get the pick-up, but he's swarmed by Hawks attackmen

The Fastest Sport on Two Feet takes to the air! The Hawk attacker launches a jump shot - and Kevin matches ... grabbing serious air time with a spectacular jump save! (Don't bring that stuff in MY lane! :-) WOW!

Senior Chris Guerin runs out the clear and the Statesmen try to bounce back on offense!

Pat Findaro works the ball out front and never lets up. The hard work pays off and Pat will end up scoring a hat trick tonight!

THERE'S a sweet shot! Pat FIndaro BLISTERS a shot from the right, and the best the Hawks goalie can do (at the far far left) is turn and watch as the ball goes by!

And just in case you thought the physical play was winding down - Nope! Small School Big Heart ... nobody plays harder!

                            

A nice clear picture of VInce - which is rare, because he's almost NEVER out front and all alone!

The Hawks offense is getting on track again, but the Statesmen D is playing huge. #18 is Senior Philip Tuttle, #1 is Ben Yazman, and that's Kevin Hia grabbing the loose ball out front!

CLEAR! When Kevin gets the ball, every defender bolts for position! #20 is Sophomore Jonathan Chambers - playing long stick at the crease.

... but the Hawks offense keeps the ball in our end. Junior Brian Ritchey plays a tight cover!

Physical? Aria and Brian gang up to protect the crease ... the hard way!

DO NOT come into the lane unless you bring your best! Brian takes numbers out front. Final score favored the other guys, but our Statesmen played with Pride and determination all night!
