SOUTH LAKES: JV ROMPS, VARSITY LOSES IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

Double overtime and our Statesmen are playing HUGE!

Here's the quick and dirty from the South Lakes games: View From The Stands says this was a huge heartbreaker. Our Statesmen played absolutely great, putting everything on the line in a game that saw five or six lead changes. After taking a lead into halftime, our Statesmen found themselves down by two as time was running out in regulation. With an amazing comeback, our Statesmen evened it up at the very end to force the game into overtime.

TWO overtimes later, a critical penalty call puts us a man down and the Seahawks got the goal to win the game with an 8-7 final score.

While this is an improvement over last year's effort at South Lakes, it sure leaves you wanting a rematch. Like today. :-)

The JV saw a much different game. The Statesmen scored early and scored often. It wasn't any one particular aspect of our game or our skill levels. Instead, View From The Stands tells me, it just seemed like the Statesmen wanted it more.

Apparently, a LOT more. Heart and determination count for a lot out there. It seemed like we were picking up all the loose balls and running out every missed shot to keep possession in their side of the field. We put a ton of shots on goal, and that's a pretty good formula for success. Keep the ball, get shots on goal, and you're gonna have a pretty good chance of having a scoreboard look like this one. Final score in the JV game - Marshall 13, South Lakes 4.

Way to go Statesmen! You did us proud out there -- both squads. Friday is Stone Bridge. AT Stone Bridge. Be there Statesmen fans!

South Lakes steps up the pressure, but our Statesmen respond in kind. Matthew Chamberlin (#12) prowls the crease while Sam navigates the crowd out front!

SWEET SHOT! Sam finds the opening under the goalie's outstretched arm. It seems like the lead has changed five times in five minutes. But our Statesmen keep the shots coming - fast and furious!

Back and forth we go! Jonathan Chambers (#30) and Sam Newland (#17) haul in a breakaway!

OH MAN, IT'S AN EMPTY NET! As an attacker, your eyes get big as saucers when you break a clear with the goalie out of position. Of course, it's harder to capitalize on these than it looks :-)

We had a good first half - the Statesmen have a one goal lead on the scoreboard - but you can't stand pat in LAX. South Lakes will make adjustments and we have to be ready for 'em.

It's nail-biting time already. Well into the 3rd quarter, both teams play to a stalemate ... and we've still got a one goal lead. Coaches Henry and Antonellis check out the clock. (Yup, we're still ahead :-)

We've still got our lead, but this could break wide open at any time!

The play is fast and furious out here! Jonathan Chambers (#20), Phillip Beard (#14) and Eliot Gehley (#11) CONVERGE on the Seahawks attackman!

Senior Co-Captain Ben Yazman in a familiar role - high tailing it out of the danger zone!

Not good. Eliot Gehley (#11) and Taylor Delean (#30) are standing tall on defense, but the ball has been on our side of the field way too much.

Chris Newcomb (#27) muscles a clear up the sideline!

Ben starts another clear, but all this time on our side of the field is paying off for the Seahawks. As the 4th quarter starts, South Lakes has taken back the lead!

The Seahawks keep up the pressure and we're back on our side of the field again! Middie Michael Born (#24) scrambles for position!

Middle of the 4th quarter and the Seahawks go up by two!

This is South Lakes' biggest lead of the night and time is running out. The next face off is gonna be huge. Sam Newland (#17) will be at center and goes over the plan with Jonathan Chambers.

Let's go Statesmen! Down by two, the comeback has to start NOW! Sam Newland puts everything he's got into this face-off!

Rule number one - take your man. John Zettler stands tall!

Sam picks the ball and things are looking up! (But can we come back this late in the game?!!)

John Zettler finds a little rough going in front of the Seahawks net, but we're on the right side of the field and the pressure is on!

We score a goal to bring it within one. Momentum is on our side, but the clock is not. You can see the determination inside every Statesmen helmet. Ben Coyle (#19) keeps up the pressure!

Dejection at the South Lakes goal as Marshall completes this AMAZING comeback! Tie score and we're headed to overtime! (Mrs. Newcomb gets an amazing pic of the ball in the net!)

Back and forth? Oh man, both teams are playing their hearts out. It's STILL tied up at the end of overtime, so we're firing out for DOUBLE OVERTIME!

The pressure's on, but as the ball goes into Marshall territory we're on the edge of our seats. Jonathan Chambers reaches for a quick poke check!

With just minutes to go, a penalty gives the Seahawks a man-up advantage. The Seahawks attack goes into overdrive.

What a heartbreaker. This shot seems to have eyes as it sneaks into the net. Final score in DOUBLE overtime is Seahawks 8, Statesmen 7.
