SOUTH LAKES: JV ROMPS, VARSITY LOSES IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
Craig Murphy sends a shot to the top pipe!
|
Here's the quick and dirty from the South Lakes games:
In the opener our JV squad scored early and scored often. It wasn't
any one particular aspect of our game or our skill levels. Instead, View From The Stands
tells me, it just seemed like the Statesmen wanted it more.
Apparently, a LOT more. Heart and determination count for
a lot out there. It seemed like we were picking up all the loose balls and
running out every missed shot to keep possession in their side of the field. We put a ton of shots on
goal, and that's a pretty good formula for success. Keep the ball, get shots on goal, and
you're gonna have a pretty good chance of having a scoreboard look like this one. Final score
in the JV game - Marshall 13, South Lakes 4.
Unfortunately, the Varsity saw a much different game.
View From The Stands says this game was a huge heartbreaker.
Our Statesmen played absolutely great, putting everything on the line in a game
that saw five or six lead changes. After taking a lead into halftime, our Statesmen
found themselves down by two as time was running out in regulation. With an amazing
comeback, our Statesmen evened it up at the very end to force the game into overtime.
TWO overtimes later, a critical penalty call puts us a man down and the Seahawks got the goal to
win the game with an 8-7 final score.
While this is an improvement over last year's effort at South Lakes, it sure leaves you
wanting a rematch. Like today. :-)
Our Statesmen did us proud out there -- both squads.
Friday is Stone Bridge. AT Stone Bridge.
Be there Statesmen fans!

... hats off ...
|
... standing tall.
|
The entire Marshall community chips in to help
with these games. And here's the special community-service secret:
Sometimes, like Mr. Guerin and Mr. DeLean pictured here at the scorers' table, you get a front
row seat for the Fastest Sport On Two Feet! LET'S GET IT STARTED!
|
|
|
|
GAME ON! Craig Murphy (#18) takes the face-off and you can tell
from the opening whistle - these Statesmen are fired up!
|
Tommy McCormick (#44) roars into the offensive end
with that blue stick flashin'!
|
Wow! Attackman Peter Martinez (#22) gets right in front and scores
fron point blank range!
|
Didn't View From The Stands say it seemed like our
Statesmen just wanted it more? Craig Murphy is SURROUNDED, but still comes out with
the possession ...
|
... and then flashes a BLISTERING shot
while the Seahawks D is left reachin'
|
Our Statesmen kept the ball in the Seahawks end by grabbing
loose balls and chasing down every shot!
OK it's hard to see the numbers, but that's Nick Keshavarz-Nia (#37) on the left, then
Anson Felder (#23) mixing it up in the middle, and
Brandon McCullen (#32) on the right
|
OUCH! Peter Martinez goes FLYING!
Go ahead ... He gets knocked down he gets up again. You're never gonna keep him down!
|
Oh man, speaking of Ouch. Look carefully at the center of the picture
to see why there's a loose ball rolling to the left! Defensemen Collin Newcomb (#29) and
Andrew Embree (#41) leave Seahawkage in their wake as Craig Murphy (#18) prowls out front.
|
Sweet! Collin takes the clear and streaks into the offensive end
|
|
|
Early and often! Peter Martinez got back up again and is leading
the attack!
|
BOOM! Brandon McCullen (#32) blasts away with a high heater!
|
|
For all the attention Craig can draw from the refs :-),
this time it's Craig gettin' a penalty in the back!
|
Freshman Josh Yazman (#30) powers his way through
the would-be Seahawks check!
|
Cameron Herbolsheimer (#25) cuts HARD but doesn't see the defender
bearing down from behind!
|
Our defense did a pretty good job of keeping us out of our
own zone. Andrew Embree scoops up a dangerous loose ball in front of goalie Jonathan
Geiger (#14).
|
OH MAN, the Seahawks attacker has NUTHIN' TO SHOOT AT!
Jonathan Geiger has the pipe, Andrew Embree has the angle, and
Alex Freedman (#43) is there with the poke check!
(Top right corner--are you kidding??? Might as well aim for the pinhole under
Jonathan's elbow! :-)
|
Andrew gets the rebound and protects his stick from the attacker!
|
Middie Austin Raymer (#33) races the clear into South Lakes
territory as the first-half clock winds down!
|
Who wants it more??!! Craig Murphy barrels right up the middle
for a shot at the top pipe!
|
OK, that was a pretty good half :-)
|
Rest fast, 'cause halftime's almost over!
|
No one is surprised that the Seahawks come out
fired up in the 2nd half!
Steven Nguyen (#15) dives in for a loose ball!
|
Oh yeah, it's gettin' physical out here. :-) Steven Nguyen
gets knocked down the hard way! (That's OK ... never gonna keep us down!)
|
Craig Murphy breaks free from the pack and even the referee
races to keep up!
|
Brandon McCullen keeps the pressure on.
ANOTHER monster shot!
|
Possession and shots on goal!
Middie Anson Felder (#23) lets fly from out front
|
Nick Keshavarz-Nia (#37) works the corner like he owns it!
|
And when Peter Martinez (#22) CUTS this corner, the Seahawks
are left scrambling!
|
Even though the scoreboard is looking good, the game is as tough
as any we've played. And Steven Nguyen is in the middle of it again!
|
Uh oh. When the sticks come up, we're probably
gonna see minutes in the box. Craig Murphy mixes it up while Alex Guerin (#27)
looks to pick up the ball!
|
Middie Danny Zirkle (#6) works to the middle
|
Uh oh again ... it's gettin' sloppy out here.
Coach is pleased with the hard work and heart. But some crisp passing might
avoid the whole mess! :-)
|
Ah, THERE ya go!
Alex Guerin (#27) with a sweet crisp pass.
|
Oh man.
|
Well I'll tell you what. The final score is pretty
lopsided - 13 to 4, good guys - but we never let up for a second.
From start to finish, our Statesmen are diggin' for every loose ball like it's the final minute
of a tie game. I'll take that every time! Congratulations to the JV on their
second win of the year (and no losses)!
|
For your moment of Statesmen Zen, we take you to the SIDELINES
where Trainer John Reynolds treats a critical injury.
|
We hope she'll be OK and ready for action by next game.
We rely on this type of dedication in the Marshall stands!
