Marshall High School, 4/3/06 --
WOODSON AND RAIN PREVAIL
Co-Captain Jason Cheng #35
turns the corner
The JV game was stopped in the 4th quarter because of the huge
thunderstorms and tornado warning. The Varsity game was postponed completely,
and will be made up on another date
[April 24].
In the storm-shortened opener, the JV team played a tough, tough game, but we
were basically out-gunned by a quick and well-disciplined Woodson team.
The Statesmen defensive squad put on a strong show for the first half,
combating a constant barrage of attacks and keeping the score relatively close.
But the Cavaliers proved to be a stronger team out there.
The Cavs defense played huge, and the netminder put a stop to every Statesmen
scoring chance. The shutout, even in a shortened game like this, was well-earned
by the Woodson D. The Woodson offense, on the other hand, was held in check ...
for a while. But as the game wore on, the Cavs offense got it going.
6 goals isn't a monster number, but when the defense gets a shutout, 6 goals
in a winner - and that was the final score. Cavs 6, Statesmen 0.
The big upside to this painful loss was that Marshall's
"little school/big heart" attitude was on display throughout - by all the players.
The other big upside is ... WE'VE GOT PICTURES! (And the pictures are just amazing!)
OK, so I still don't have numbers for the JV roster, so the captions are a bit
on the anonymous side :-) ... SO HERE'S THE THIRD COOL THING!
If you see yourself in these photos (or if you recognize your son in these photos)
let me know
and I'll update the page to attach the name to the photo [I got one photo ID'd just a few minutes ago]!
Next up is the big Varsity Tournament over at Lee High School on Friday and Saturday.
We'll be playing some terrific competition (South Lakes, Lee and Washington-Lee),
so you should expect some great games! Be there, Marshall family!
Go Statesmen!

Pregame on the sidelines
Great photos by Mrs. Newcomb.
Nice closeups, too.
The Captains come to center court.
Start off with a bang. We're bringing a lot of lumber to
this game.
Bring the lumber or CHASE the lumber - either way we're
On The Move.™ (That's Chris Newcomb, Peter Embree and
Craig Murphy showing the quick feet.)
Jason Cheng #35 turns the corner, but the Woodson
defender matches up step for step.
Coaches Gehley and Ohri work out some key adjustments.
A little double-teaming pays off - and puts the ball on the ground!
Long stick and middie gang up - but the Woodson
attack goes JUST out of reach.
Marshall can do "just-out-of-reach" as well.
Sam Mencarini #25 scampers around the corner. (JUST out of reach! :-)
At the half - it's time for a gut check!
We're all in this together.
One on one with the Coach
Starting the second half with energy!
Run the side and SHOW THE BALL!
Stephen Armstrong shows off some crisp passing around
the horn.
Craig Murphy #1 had a busy day out here.
And it got busier and busier as the day wore on
Long sticks against short sticks -
if we want to turn it around, we've gotta pick these up.
Coach takes a long look - we're
gonna have to do something diffrent out there.
It's starting to get physical - but that doesn't bother
Little School Big Heart. That's Sam Mencarini winning a face off against the Cavaliers.
Crowded? Little School Big Heart can do physical, too :-)
BOOM ! Player and ball - both are loose on the ground.
There's not an ounce of quit in the Statesmen game.
Run every play to the limit (and then some).
Co-Captain Chris Newcomb leads by example.
When the ball shakes loose, you gotta stretch for it
(What a great close-up photo!)
Man on man - it's the essence of LAX!
Doing everything we can! Sam Mencarini #25 and Taylor Delean #41
pop free another loose ball!
There's your game. We keep trying. But the shots keep missing. Brutal.
Time is running out, the storm clouds are rolling in, and
Jason Cheng is still pushing it up.
Nope - we just never got it going
Ball. Stick. Statesman. It was a tough night from start to finish
For your moment of Statesmen Zen, we give you a wider perspective on
that bobble-scoop photo. Concentrate on the ball AND on the guy who's got you by the arm.
Focus. Concentration. Sweet.
