FOURTH-RANKED REBELS TAKE A PAIR OVER STATESMEN

It was a gorgeous night for watching a lacrosse game - beautiful weather, and the extra sunshine we get from Daylight Savings Time made the view from the top of Jimmy Miller Stadium just spectacular. We gotta get out like this more often, ya know!
The tough part, of course, is that our Statesmen were hosting the fourth-ranked Fairfax Rebels, and we knew we were gonna have to bring our A game - and stay focused all night long.
The Statesmen JV squad got off to a slow start against the Rebels, and by halftime we were already down by a 5-1 score. Fairfax controlled the ball for much of that first half, and they really got a lot of shots on goal. The first-half Marshall goal was blasted past the Rebels goalkeeper by Sophomore Ben Yazman. In the second half our Statesmen defense really tightened up and we held the Rebels to just two more goals for the rest of the game. The Statesmen offense also got in gear and we outscored the Rebels in that second half (3-2). Freshman Michael Born scored twice in the half and Sophomore Sam Mencarini put in the other. The final score was 7-4, Fairfax.
Brian Ritchey, Christopher Newcomb and Daniel Nguyen played well at defense and Kevin Hia had another strong game in goal, especially in the second half. Another good effort by the JV despite the loss.
The Varsity had a tough game against a strong Fairfax team. In the first half Fairfax had control of the face-offs and thus had the ball for most of the half. The Rebels put a lot of shots on goal and led at the half by a score of 6-0. In the second half Fairfax extended its lead to 11-1 with the lone Statesmen goal being scored unassisted by Aaron Hemeon. In the fourth quarter Casey Williams scored two goals - with assists from Jake Oster and Ryan Jarriel. But Fairfax continued to control the face-offs and that limited the number of Statesmen possessions. By a lot. Chris Brimsek faced a barrage of shots and had a solid game in goal. Final score in the Varsity contest was 12-3.
It was a difficult night out there, but our Statesmen played with pride and determination throughout.
Also, because people have been asking about the ambulance... that was Sophomore John Inglesby who was injured and taken to the hospital. We haven't heard how he's doing yet, but we're all hoping for a speedy recovery and hope to see #29 back in the lineup real soon.
Next Tuesday we're at home again against Lee - it should be a terrific pair of games against these Liberty District opponents.
Marshall Pride!
