Marshall High School, 4/18/06 --
TJ TAKES TWO OVER STATESMEN
Small School Big Heart played
HUGE out there!
|
According to LaxPower, Thomas Jefferson is one of the Top Ten teams
in the Virginia AAA Northern Region. And their Varsity came into Jimmy Miller
stadium - well-rested after the Spring Break and hitting on all cylinders.
I don't have a write-up for that game, but the final score of 16-4 really showed
how well their offense played. (Even without the writeup, though,
I have some
great pictures - an amazing pipe save, some great action shots,
and more great pix from Mrs. Newcomb - so be sure to check out the
Varsity Pix page!)
JV Game: - This turned out to be an
edge-of-your-seat nail-biter that showed again why lacrosse is such an amazing
sport to watch (and play). They don't call it the Fastest Sport On Two Feet
for nothin' :-)
A little impromptu equipment repair

The game started close and stayed close for most of the night.
Parents tell me they saw some just amazing plays on offense from
Sam Mencarini, Stephen Armstrong and Jason Cheng. (I'm pretty sure Sam led
the scoring with two, but not sure who got the other goal yet.)
The defense held the high-flying Colonials in check and kept the game close by
making it a low-scoring battle. Make no mistake. The TJ offense played very well,
and kept the pressure on our side of the field a lot tonight. But the Statesmen D
held up great. Taylor Delean and Chris Newcomb ran some awesome interference,
coupled with huge hits to shake the ball loose for takeaways. Goalie Craig Murphy
played solid in goal. The defense was complemented by play from Sophomore
Roman Polyakov and Freshmen Peter Embree and Collin Newcomb.
While we kept it close for most of the game, towards the end TJ seemed to pull out
for what looked like a commanding 3-1 lead in this low-scored slugfest. But our
Statesmen never quit, and play by play , face-off by face-off, we slowly turned
the tide. The momentum started to shift and before you know it we're just a single goal back, 3-2. Then suddenly the rally is in full gear and we score again to tie it
up in the fourth quarter! What a rally! As the clock winds down neither team
can get an advantage. There are chances for both teams, but the defenses come up
huge. Two minutes... one minute... and then with less than a minute on the clock,
the Colonials mounted one last charge. And it turned out to be the game winner ... with just
30 seconds to go!
You hate to see such a close game end up in the L column. But this game was just
amazing to watch and it really showed the Marshall Pride out there. Teamwork and solidarity by all the players - starters and backups every one - behind the leadership and mentoring of Coach Ohri and Coach Gehley. Leadership and teamwork have led this squad to an especially rewarding season. Marshall Pride!

During warmups, Coach Ohri calls for our Marshall Statesmen to dig deep tonight!

Our Statesmen set the tone from the very first series!
|
Small School brings more than just a Big Heart to
THIS matchup!
|
SHOT! Our defense is playing strong, and our offense gets some great
scoring chances early! The TJ goalie is pretty agile out there! (And Mrs. Newcomb is getting
great pictures.)
|
OK, these are some very-rare TALL photos. But I just couldn't
resist! On the defensive clear, the first rule is
PROTECT THE BALL!
|
ANOTHER tall photo from Mrs. Newcomb shows the
TJ attacker standing tall against our spirited
Statesmen defense!
|
Pick up the loose ball and clear - but make no mistake, the physical
play is getting dished from both sides fo the field!
|
TJ takes what might seem to be a commanding 3-1 lead
in this low-scoring affair ...
|
... but our Statesmen begin the comeback- starting with
the fundamentals: ball control and stick handling!
|
|
|
Play by play, shot after shot, we turn the tide and swing the momentum.
(How DOES Mrs. Newcomb get these great game pix? Amazing!)
|
There's no time to let up - not for an instant ...
|
|
Press the attack ...
|
... and we've just gotta get every loose ball. (Oh wait! - don't over-run it!)
|
BOTH squads are playing with a huge amount of pride and
determination. And there's no comeback if we let them score!
|
|
|
Craig Murphy hugs the pipe while our defenders cover the attack!
|
And then a big save comes our way ...
|
... followed by an equally important clear ...
|
The Statesmen offense presses, while the Colonials defense stumbles ...
|
It's MAYHEM in front of the TJ goalkeeper, and our Statesmen not only
get the pickup, but we get the goal as well! Statesmen tie it up!
|
Small School Big Heart. It's crunch time, and EVERYONE is on the line ...
|
Loose ball out front - every possession is critical!
Back and forth it goes ... both teams press and neither team gets an advantage!
|
|
|
We get the ball ... then they get the ball ... then we get the ball back again.
|
The clock is winding down and the action jams up in front of the
Statesmen goal!
|
Just thirty seconds left. The TJ attacker picks up the loose ball ...
|
They break clear and the shot goes in for the TJ win!
You hate to lose a close one like this, but we played hard
we posted a huge comeback, and it was the closest
game of the year against a very strong opponent!
|
Your moment of Statesmen Zen is EXTREMELY well deserved.
What a game!
