Marshall High School, 4/24/06 --
CAVALIERS DOMINATE WEATHER-POSTPONED REMATCH
Junior goalie Kevin Hia makes the save!
Back on April 3, the #3 Woodson Cavaliers came to Jimmy Miller Stadium to play the
Statesmen Varsity and JV sqauds. The JV got most of their game completed before the
thunderstorms hit and the tornado warning announced, but the Varsity game was
pushed off to be played another day.
"Another Day" turned out to be Monday (April 24), but the tornado still showed up -
this time in the form of the swarming Cavaliers offense.
Simply put, the Woodson offense played ball control and most of the game was spent
on our side of the field. They had about a million shots on goal (or something like that),
which means that Junior goalie Kevin Hia must have had about 999,987 saves.
(That's Kevin in the photo at left with one of his more acrobatic saves!)
We tried every trick in the book, but just couldn't get the ball enough and we only put
one goal on the board. Final score was 13-1, which didn't really show how hard-fought
the game was. But it did show just how good the Cavs are. They're ranked #3 in the NoVa
region (behind just Westfield and Langley), and man they showed why tonight.
In Woodson's case, it's all about ball control.
Next up: travel to McLean on Tuesday. Be there Marshall fans!
VARSITY GAME: WOODSON 13 - MARSHALL 1
These are pictures from the Varsity game.
Pictures from the JV game - which was held on April 3 - are
on
the JV Pix page!
In the glare of the afternoon sun, our Statesmen are out
to a quick start, and Co-Captain Pat Findaro gets off a quality shot from
in close!
Picking up the loose ball is always critical. Co-Captain Jake Oster
draws a bead on this one.
Soph. middie Ryan Jarriel digs for possession ...
... And Jake grabs the pickup! (More great close-up
photos by Mrs. Newcomb!)
But then the Woodson offense got the ball, and they just
never gave it back!
Ouch! Once the high-powered Cavs offense got on track, the shots
on goal were brutal. Kevin Hia stood his ground, but the goals came in bunches.
SAVE! Kevin was twisting and turning every which way to
fend off the attack, and here he blocks a blistering top-center shot ... sweet!
Ouch again! Sometimes it seems like every bounce is
going the wrong way.
This drop shot looped over everyone and found the top of the net! Brutal.
Every once in a while we were able to grab possession,
and when we did we bolted out of there in a hurry! That's Junior defenseman Ben Yazman
taking a shot on the neck!
Precision passing is critical to a clear -
that's Pat Findaro on the crisp pass into your living room.
We did everything we could to turn offense chances into
quality shots. Jake Oster spins left to stop the Cavs defender in his tracks ...
... But the Woodson defense was terrific at keeping the
Statesmen offense covered up.
The Woodson goalie grabbed the rebound on this shot, and
Soph. middie Michael Born gives chase around the crease!
Vinsanity on the clear! Vince Reese streaks up the
sideline!
Freshman Kevin Smith takes a turn doing the
running-clear as well!
At hafltime, Coach Williams makes adjustments ...
... And the second half starts with a hard-fought face-off that
seems to go in Marshall's favor!
Junior goalie Kevin Hia starts
a clear
This is Senior Co-Captain
Aria Kavyani
Is that Jake? I think so!
POW! The second half is getting physical! EVERYONE converges on this loose ball!
(Especially the guy coming in from behind Frosh. Eliot Gehley #13!)
Physical? Pat Findaro closes in on the loose ball ...
... And then gets LEVELED from the blind side.
Sure it was a penalty, but it's gonna take a few minutes for
Pat to come back from this one. Yes, he was OK - Pat's a gamer from start to finish!
#17 is Freshman Sam Newland
Junior middie Ben Yazman
And that's Junior middie John Zettler
Sophomore long stick Daniel Nguyen leads a possession change
to give our offense one last shot!
Casey Williams works the play out front ...
... And then Jake Oster takes the shot from close in the middle -
but what you see in this photo tells the story of the game: FIVE Cavs defenders
have clogged up the paint - it's hard to get *anything* through that kind of
traffic!
Sophomore defender Jonathan Chambers brings us our moment of
Statesmen Zen: All determination. All heart. Leave nothing on the field.
And never EVER quit. Sweet.
