McLean High School, 4/25/06 --
JV BEATS MCLEAN, VARSITY FALLS
Playing just one day after the Woodson game, our Statesmen traveled to McLean.
The Varsity fell by a score of 16-3, but the JV improved their record on the season
to five and three. The score in the JV game was Statesmen 7, Highlanders 3.
This is quite a schedule that the weather has handed us. After coming back from
Spring Break and waiting for the monsoons to slip by, we're playing 5 games in
just 10 days! And the teams we're playing? Wow.
The Liberty District is shaping up to be a Northern Virginia powerhouse
just like it was in 2005. OK, so Liberty has smaller schools than the other Districts,
but it also has more LAX tradition. Three of LAXPower's Northern Virginia Top Ten
are from the Liberty District (second only to the Division 6 Concorde).
And with #8 Hayfield on our schedule as well, Marshall is playing four of those ten.
(Where's the RPI when you need it? :-)
Two days from now we're on the field again - it's the Madison game!
At home. And it's Senior night. Be there Statesmen fans!
Marshall Pride!
JV GAME: MARSHALL 7 - MCLEAN 3
These are pictures from the JV game.

Huddle up ... Marshall Pride!
Here's the face off ... up close and personal. What great close-up photos tonight from Mrs. Newcomb!
Small School Big Heart doesn't care that the McLean players are
just a little bit taller :-)
Our Statesman offense gets an early jump to take the lead!
Our Statesman defense is fired up as well! (And in this case,
the cross-check penalty was JUST out of reach :-)
Looking down the barrel of Big Heart defense!
Close checking and fast pursuit can turn into over-running the play sometimes.
The Highlander attackman protects the ball, but the
Statesman D protects the goal!
We're hustling to the ball
on every play!
Craig Murphy stands tall in goal ...
... while our defense keeps the attackers on the outside
looking in!
The cutback gives the attacker a shot at our goal ...
... but Craig and our defense are ready and waiting.
Then the quick clear ... working pretty well tonight.
Everyone contributes - that's how the clear works ...
... everyone is in position, and knows what to do!
And sometimes it's best to just grab the ball and
STREAK up the sideline!
(Just remember to hang onto the ball :-)
Coach Ohri is pretty pleased with how things are going so far
We're putting points on the board, and holding the Highlanders off,
which means we got some face-off work to do!
Sometimes you take the ball - sometimes you have to take the man!
(Look for the ball in the dirt - to the right of the feet.)
NOW it's time to pick up the ball :-)
Ball control comes from grabbing the pickups ...
... and keeping it with good ball handling.
Working the ball on offense ... we were having success, but
the Highlanders defense was playing huge!
They checked up close and scrambling for the pickups
was the only way to keep getting quality chances!
HE SHOOTS!
HE SCORES!
Even the missed shots turn
into pickup chances - to keep possession
And that's how we stayed on the Highlanders' side of the field for so long.
The name of the game tonight was offense, plenty of it,
and never letting up ...
... and even though the McLean scoreboard is hidden a bit,
the final numbers are as sweet as can be. Final Score:
Guest (that would be US) 7, Highlanders 3.
And our Statesmen JV squad goes to 5 and 3 for the year!
Your moment of scary Statesmen Zen ... Man, if THAT'S the net they're shooting at
we're gonna have to play some AWESOME defense :-)
