Marshall High School, 4/27/05 --
BOTH SQUADS HAVE TOUGH NIGHT VS. LANGLEY
Freshman Aaron Hemeon
Well, if you like scoring... or if you like Langley(!!)...
then tonight's games went pretty well.
But for Statesmen fans, it got a little ugly. :-)
Frankly, Langley and Woodson are currently battling it out for the top spot
in the entire AAA Northern Region. In back-to-back games against these two
Region leaders, we got to see first-hand just what types of teams they are.
Our Statesmen pulled out all the stops, and played with lots of determination,
but the final scores against both of these opponents favored the Other Side.
I don't have much detail from the JV game yet, but View From The Stands
tells me that our Varsity played a VERY competitive game against the Saxons
for the entire first quarter. But then things kind of broke down at bit, and when
it broke, it broke big.
Again, we've got great photos - so many that we've divided 'em into two
separate pages (again :-). One for the JV game and the other for the Varsity.
The Statesman in this photo is Aaron Hemeon, a Freshman on the Varsity squad
who's already turning in a ton of productive minutes.
On Monday, we're On The Road against Madison. You know where that is...
so everyone Be There!
VARSITY GAME: LANGLEY 16 - MARSHALL 3
These are pictures from the Varsity game. Pictures from the JV game are
on
the JV Pix page!

Marshall Statesmen huddle up before the opening faceoff
FACEOFF ! - From the opening whistle to the end of the game, this
was a hard-fought contest all the way
Clogging up the shooting lanes, that's #24 Senior Kevin Wiencek,
#28 Freshman Griffin Cummins, and Goalie Chris Brimsek
A slice of life in front of the crease ! - #27 Senior Derek Laedtke
levels the attackman, but the shot catches the pipe and goes in!
BALL ! - The Saxons defense always seemed to have a stick
in the play. Here we pick up the loose ball,
as #9 Junior Chris Guerin comes in to help
#14 Co-Captain Aria Kavyani
The Saxons attack was relentless. Senior Goalie Chris Brimsek
hugs the pipe, and still gets
position in case the pass goes out front, while Freshman Mark Findaro covers through the crease
It's a hard-hitting night for everyone in front of the
Marshall crease ! #15 Ryan Jarriel and #26 Mark Findaro converge on the attackers
The Saxons D got in their share of hard hits, too.
Aaron Hemeon scrambles to get that loose ball
Aaron cuts sharp to the left - tryin' to get an open look out in front
SHOT ! - but the Langley goalie gathers in the rebound
#19 Junior Co-Captain Pat Findaro takes a hard check from the
Langley long stick
Surrounded by Saxons, we've gotta pick up every loose ball we can !
The Statesmen D never lets up - #28 Griffin Cummins and
Jake Oster zero in on a lone attacker ...
... then clear it fast up the sideline !
#9 Junior Chris Guerin trades stickwork with the Langley attacker
A familiar sight all year long - Co-Captain Pat Findaro clears
up the sideline and dodges the heavy traffic
#26 Freshman defenseman Mark Findaro runs his clear
past the crease
#24 Senior Kevin Wiencek runs his clear all the way out
- using the long-stick to keep possession
#19 Pat Findaro cuts left to get past the defender
Hard to see, but that's Co-Captain Aria Kavyani clearing up the
left sideline
Every once in a while, the goalie needs to run it out.
Co-Captain Chris Brimsek runs it out this time.
#4 Sophomore Jake Oster dives for the steal
A well-organized defensive clear. After Brimsek makes the save,
the Statesmen D break for good position - #10 Casey Williams,
#27 Derek Laedtke, #26 Mark Findaro and I can't really recognize the Statesman middie racing up the middle
