Crunch time! A tough night
for the JV.

The weather was absolutely gorgeous. A perfect night for the Fastest Sport On Two Feet, and as it turned out a perfect night for bringing Small School Big Heart to the 2006 Liberty District lacrosse season. Not too shabby for building on the long-standing Marshall-Madison tradition as well.

Of course, the biggest news on Senior Night was that the Varsity pulled out a wonderful come-from-behind victory over a traditional rival that LAXPower said we were supposed to lose to by by 4. But as we all know, Small School Big Heart doesn't take much truck with "supposed to."

The JV game ended up with a very different scoreboard, but the fire and dedication were precisely the same. Madison broke out to an early lead, as happened in the Varsity game. But in the JV game, we just never turned that corner. In fact, the corner kind of stayed away from us all night. Oh sure, we gave our all on every single play. We fought. We scrapped. We adjusted. We tried everything we could think of. But the Warhawks had it going, and our Statesmen just never got on track.

Unfortunately, once a game starts leaning heavily towards one team or the other, the momentum becomes harder and harder to break. The more one team can keep possession in the offensive end, the tougher it is for the other defense to play their best - which of course helps keep the ball right where it is.

It was a tough game. Very physical on both sides of the ball. But in the end the scoreboard belonged to the Warhawks. Final score was 20 - 2 in favor of Madison.

The JV had a terrific season in 2006. After our amazing start, our Statesmen played tough against some of the best teams in Northern Virginia.. And in EVERY SINGLE GAME, our Statesmen did us proud. They played with a relentless determination and an unflinching can-do attitude that's best summed up in two words: Marshall Pride.

Thank you JV Statesmen! What a year!

Huddle up for the Madison game - MARSHALL PRIDE!

Our Statesmen begin with a couple quality chances - and Mrs. Newcomb gets
a great close-up of this leaping shot!

The checking is really close ...

... and we don't really have much room to run our offense.

As always, face-offs and loose ball pickups are absolutely critical ...

... AND it's getting physical out here from the very start.
Cross-check on the neck is a little distracting :-0

The Madison defense SWARMED to every loose ball.

Some loose balls were on their side of the field, but a lot were on ours.
As the Warhawks gained the upper hand in possessions, they got the
scoring chances, too, and capitalized.

We found ourselves on defense a LOT. Every clear was important,
and the clears began with strong, aggressive goalie play.

And if they crowd you on the clear, the quickest way out is the
quickest way out: Pick up the ball and RUN!
Not just run ... but RUN FAST! :-)

When the clears work properly, we can convert 'em into quality scoring chances.
He shoots, he scores!

So did someone say the game is getting physical? That's OK,
we can play that game.
Is this what they mean by saying "We got a jump on the ball"?
(I didn't think so either :-)

Pulling out all the stops ... we adjust, we shift

... everyone contributes!

Everyone in ... with all the adjustments, we need to make sure we're on the same page.

The long sticks re-group ... and re-set.

The defnse comes out with a whole new level of energy and determination

And make no mistake ... this is a Marshall-Madison game,
and the hitting is fierce!

We're playing a lot of this game
on our own side of the field...

And while the Warhawks get their chances and scores, we're scrambling
to get our clears past the double-teams.

Break out fast ...

... get in position ...

... and ALWAYS look for the ball!

It's a tough night. It seems we're always running through a crowd ...
... and looking for some clear space to
work our plays!

Coach Ohri is working every minute ...

... and our Statesmen won't let up for a second.

Every play is important ...

... and you should always know where the ball is!

As the clock runs down ...

... the Statesmen middies ...

... are working overtime!

Long, long game - and we've gotta keep taking
care of the ball ...

... even when the double-team comes a-knocking!

We don't get as many chances as we'd like, but perseverence pays off - and we score again!

And as our offensive plays start kicking in, we've gotta slam the door on defense.

LOOK at the number of Warhawks surrounding our ball carrier!
(DON'T look at the stick being used as a giant sky hook!)

Oh man. Crunch time. And the final score is 20-2.
Ouch.
