Vienna's traditional cross-town rivalry went to the lacrosse field at Warhawks stadium on Monday night. Final score for the JV opener was 11-1 in favor of Madison; final score in the Varsity game favored the Warhawks, 15-5.

No matter what it said on the scoreboard, this game - like every game between the Statesmen and the Warhawks - was hard fought and much much closer than it looked. That's just how this series goes.

I don't have any of the play by play, but View From The Stands made a special point to highlight how well the team did on groundballs and takeaways... I can't stress enough how important each change of possession is, and how much that's tied to good old-fashioned Hard Work.

The Warhawks had a better game of it tonight - no doubt about it, and certainly no excuses - but the Statesmen got their chances as well, and the Marshall goals were entirely fun and hard-earned events. Junior Casey Williams put up 2 goals on the Statesmen side of the scoreboard, and Fresh. phenom Aaron Hemeon notched up 3 of his own.

Those of you who were wondering about the new number in goal... that was Kevin Hia, who got called up from the JV squad to fill in for downed Co-Captain Chris Brimsek. The doctors said Chris wasn't ready to play yet, so the Sophomore goalkeeper came in for his first Varsity game of the year and put in a solid performance.

Wow - quite a night, and the Marshall team never gave up throughout the game.

Friday is Senior Night at home against McLean. Be there Statesmen fans! Marshall Pride!
