Marshall High School, 5/6/05 --
SENIOR-NIGHT HONORS AT MCLEAN GAME
#30 Sophomore Mohammed Hussain
It was quite a night for lacrosse at Marshall's last home
game of the year. It was also quite a night for memories, as George C. Marshall high school
took the opportunity to honor not only the Seniors who have been a critical part of
the Statesmen LAX program, but also the proud
parents of this Senior LAX class.
As everyone in high school sports knows (or at least everyone involved with GCM
knows :-), the parents of our student athletes make a huge difference to our sports
programs, and to the GCM community overall. It was a wonderful night as each one of our
Seniors escorted their parents down the track at Jimmy Miller Stadium on Senior Night.
McLean finished the season ranked #5 in the AAA Northern Region. Like we've said before,
the Liberty District was extraordinarily competitive this year, with
Woodson and Langley taking the #1 and #2 spots.
The Highlanders Varsity played very well tonight, and yet the Statesmen offense
blasted in 6 scores past the McLean goalkeeper.
The JV contest was extremely tight - a low-scoring event that finished 5-3 in favor
of the Bad Guys - and all the Statesmen played with
pride and determination in both games. GCM was well represented tonight,
and the success of the GCM lacrosse program was in the air.
Congratulations to GCM lacrosse for a terrific, hard-fought season.
And congratulations to the Seniors for all they did for us.
And thanks - to all the Marshall fans who came out and supported us throughout
the year.
And yes, we made the Liberty District playoffs. They begin on Wednesday. At McLean
again. Marshall Pride! Go Statesmen

BAM ! Last game of the JV year? The Statesmen start it off with
some great heavy hitting - early and often
Heavy hitting? #21 Sophomore John Baker braces for a shot
from the Highlanders' #36
#1 Ben Yazman prowls on the outside, looking for a clean shot -
and that's #29 (Kevin Hia?) setting the pick
SHOT ! SAVE ! #18 Steven White blasts a ground-ball shot that bounces
right to the MIDDLE of the goalie's stick
MARSHALL PRIDE ! #15 Freshman Steven Nguyen clears out an
entire group of Highlanders !
OK, Kevin Hia normally plays in jersey #29,
but Kevin's been playing Varsity goal -
so I'm not sure who this is, but he was everywhere tonight
Here's #29 again, stickhandling through traffic - and what a
great close-up photo by Mrs. Newcomb!
Coach Ohri watches the action from the sidelines
Close-checking action from Statesman defender Chris Newcomb
More close-checking action - Stephen Armstrong makes the play
chest-to-chest
#30 Mohammed Hussain brings a load with HIS checks ! Any attacker who
tries to turn the corner on Mohammed finds nothing but trouble
Wow ! #30 Sophomore Mohammed Hussain knocks over the ball carrier,
pops the ball loose, and then leads the footrace to the loose ball - a one man wrecking crew !
Here's the whole defenive lineup on the Marshall side.
That's #9 Sam Mencarini in goal, while #11 Brian Ritchey and #13 Chris Newcomb man
the back line
#8 Sophomore Joshua Lee scoops up the ball and starts the clear
#6 Jason Cheng stick-handles through the Highlanders traffic
Big Brian Ritchey holds off the attack with some strong long-stick work
POW ! The hitting doesn't stop ! Look closely at this picture.
Sure, you see the loose ball in the upper right, but check out
the LOOSE STICK that Sam Mencarini knocked free (lower left) !
(Click the picture for a close-up)
BALL ! Chris Newcomb and Alex Mabe race for the loose ball
(Chris knows the rule: Short stick goes first :-)
#7 Freshman Alex Mabe turns the corner against the
Highlanders defender
Coach Ohri's concerned -
but the Statesmen are playing well
#29 stick-handles while the McLean defender winds up for a
slashing penalty :-)
#9 Sam Mencarini out of the goal now and bringing the ball up on offense
#18 Steven White looks for the passing lane
#1 Ben Yazman blasts a WICKED ground-ball shot at the McLean net
(look at the goalie's face - he's been hugging the wrong pipe !)
Sam Mencarini forces the action in front of the Highlanders crease - fast and furious
#29 scoops up the ball out front - ready to reset the offense
#8 Joshua Lee fires off a sharp clean pass
#9 Sam Mencarini cuts across the top ...
... while #2 Stephen Armstrong waits for a cutter
#7 Alex Mabe winds up for a shot, as the Highlander long-stick tries to hold him off
#1 Ben Yazman runs an offensive set ...
... and #6 Freshman Jason Cheng swings away with another
shot on goal
Great game, Statesmen ! Great year for the JV !
#1 Ben Yazman is the picture of classic LAX as he cuts the corner with a
defender close behind - Marshall Pride !
