FAIRFAX TOPS MARSHALL IN PLAYOFFS REMATCH
View From The Stands:
--
As happened at the end of the regular season, a Fairfax game had to be rescheduled
due to the weather. The anticipated Thursday rematch with Fairfax got pushed back to
Saturday, and under unseasonably cold and threatening skies, the Fairfax
Rebels held off a determined Statesmen squad.
--
The final score was 16-12... I don't have any of the details yet... but you have to look
back at this season and be pleased with all the progress and all the accomplishments
our Statesmen made.
--
The final LAX Power ratings reflected the marked improvement in this year's Statesmen
performance--up six points from a 72.91 to 78.67. And the scoreboards around the
District told a similar tale: Gone were the 10-goal losses against traditional
District powerhouses. Gone were the games when we scored only once.
And in their place was a string of very close games in a very competitive District.
One goal was the difference against Madison.
One goal was the difference against McLean.
One goal was the difference against Lee.
Two goals was the difference against Fairfax.
We won some of those games; we lost some. But it's clear that we improved
this year--dramatically.
And when we took our game outside the conference (at least when the weather let us :-),
we did better than ever. The Liberty District is one of the strongest lacrosse
leagues in all of Virginia.
--
Once again, Statesmen, you've done us all proud. Congratulations. And thanks.
And just one more thing:

Marshall Pride! (Look for more in 2004!)

NEED VOLUNTEER HELP FOR 2004
View From The Stands:
--
It's been my pleasure to help support the Marshall Lacrosse Web site this year,
but as students graduate (and parents move on :-), we're very much looking
for someone who can take on the wonderful opportunity - next year - of keeping
Marshall LAX fans, players and families up to date on All The Latest
via the marshalllacrosse.org Web site. As we mentioned at the
beginning of the season, the Web site is the visible results of input and
participation from many people: We need folks who will routinely contact the
webmaster with results and news, we need people who will let us know about all
the schedule changes and events that pop up during the year, and we need one
or more people who will help update the Web site itself. A command of HTML
is not really necessary, but familiarity with computers is a plus, and a willingness
to learn a few new tricks on the computer, to become the ubiquitous-and-all-knowing
View From The Stands, and to boldly edit the works of others - are all
absolutely mandatory (and absolutely fun! :-).
--
A special 2003 Thanks to Bill Sellery (Phil's Dad), who coordinated volunteer
activities this year.
--
And a newer 2004 Thanks to Penny Gentry (Mark's Mom), who has agreed to be
the initial coordinator for all the Lacrosse Booster activities next year.
Check out our Volunteer! page to see what
needs to be done--and give some real thought about what you can do to help.
Send her e-mail at mikegent@aol.com
if you have any questions at all.

Thanks again, everyone. And congratulations to the team.

STATESMEN LOSE TO FAIRFAX, GET RE-MATCH IN FIRST ROUND OF PLAYOFFS
View From The Stands:
--
The Fairfax game was pushed back from Friday to Monday, due to wet field conditions.
(Marshall AD Brian Grainer said the only thing the field at Jimmy Miller Stadium
would have been good for on Friday night was crew!)
SENIOR RECOGNITION NIGHT was therefore a little delayed, but it moved
forward on Monday night without a hitch (see News&Notes).
Congratulations, Seniors, and thanks for everything you've done to help
the Marshall Statesmen Lacrosse program!
--
The game itself was a tough, gritty game. Very close--against a tough opponent--but
we ended up just a couple of goals shy.
--
Our offense played well when they had the ball--especially the starting
attack line of Phil Sellery, Joe Milosavich and Mark Gentry--helped quite a bit
by midfielder Chris Hunter.
The defense stayed tough against a very quick, very precise Fairfax offense that
was always trying to capitalize on fast breaks.
Strong defensive play came from Tom Gratton, Russ Jacobs
(who played both long and short stick), Sean Horvath and Jonathon Horner.
Goalie Sean Delean had a multitude of good saves and looked good in goal.
(View From The Stands is guessing we'll be working on face-offs and clearing to
prepare for our upcoming re-match with Fairfax--in the playoffs.)
--
For the night, Phil Sellery and Mark Gentry tied for top Statesmen scoring honors
with three goals apiece.
Joe Milosavich put in two, and Chris Hunter scored one.
Final score: Fairfax 11, Marshall 9.
--
Playoffs start on Thursday, and we'll open the first round with a re-match
against these exact same Rebels--although this time we'll be playing AT FAIRFAX.
Because the top four finishers in Districts go to the Regional tournament,
this game is critical. And because the game is AWAY, we need everyone to
come out and support OUR MARSHALL STATESMEN!

Thursday. 7:30. DON'T BE LATE!

STATESMEN PLAY STRONG BUT LOSE TO DISTRICT LEADER WOODSON
View From The Stands:
--
In wet, rainy and muddy conditions Monday night, the Varsity lost a tough road game
to District leaders W.T. Woodson, 16 - 8. But make no mistake--the Statesmen played
very well, kept fighting to the very end, and the end result (although a loss)
is actually quite positive. Woodson is ranked #2 in the VA Northern Region and
no other Liberty District team has played them as close as Marshall did.
Indeed, no one else in the District has scored 8 against the Cavaliers!
--
Phil Sellery led the Statesmen scoring attack with 4 goals and 1 assist.
Joe Milosavich put in 2 goals, Mark Gentry had 1 goal with 3 assists, and
Chris Hunter also put a goal past the Cavaliers netminder. The defense played
hard against one of the fastest, most powerful offenses in Northern Virginia,
with terrific play coming from Tom Grattan, Russ Jacobs and many others.
Goalie Sean Delean had several important saves.
--
Overall, our players accorded themselves very well--giving a strong effort
and making the deep Woodson team work hard on both offense and defense.
Final score: Woodson 16, Marshall 8.
--
On Friday, we play our last regular season game and it's a huge one!
We're up against Fairfax--here at home--in a tough conference contest between two
evenly-matched squads. Also, assuming that Fairfax beats McLean, the Rebels
come into Jimmy Miller Stadium with the exact same conference record as the
Statesmen.
--
Everyone needs to be there for the regular-season closer!

STATESMEN BEAT LANCERS IN ANOTHER ONE-GOAL GAME
View From The Stands:
--
Wow! It was another tight game as this year's Liberty District is
proving to be very strong and very competitive.
--
Lee got out of the gate quickly on this cold and rainy Friday night,
and jumped to a 4-1 lead. The Statesmen came
roaring back, and at the half the score was 6-5 Lee. In the second half, our
defense held the Lancers to just 2 goals for the rest of the game, and one
of those goals was scored when we were a man down (on a penalty). Meanwhile,
the offense kept the pressure on.
We scored the go-ahead goal with about 4:00 minutes left to go, and
the Statesmen offense did a good job of running out the clock. With about 1:30 left
on the clock, the Lancers got the ball back for one last offensive push.
The Statesmen D played tough and finally got the ball back with :18 seconds left
and sealed the victory with a good ending clear. Final score: Marshall 8, Lee 8.
--
From here on out, the games get tougher and tougher. Langley is rated #5 in the
Northern Region, Woodson is rated #2. Plus, we've got an important non-conference
game against Wakefield and the season finale is against a tough Fairfax squad.
We need everyone to come out for these games!

STATESMEN COME OUT OF SPRING BREAK WITH A WIN OVER WASHINGTON-LEE
View From The Stands:
--
Everyone contributed in this important win coming back from Spring Break.
Joe Milosavich led the scoring with 5 goals, followed by Mark Gentry with 4,
Chris Hunter with 3, Kent Miller with 2, Phil Sellery 1, Blair Machado 1, and
Sharif Sabur 1. View From The Stands has to describe this as a get-the-rust-out
kind of game, against a relatively inexperienced Washington-Lee squad.
The Marshall offense was effective, with balanced scoring, but still a bit rough
around the edges in execution. Sean Delean was back in goal
and the defense played tough - allowing very few shots
and clearing effectively back to the offense.
--
By the way, did anyone mention that the weather was just about perfect!
Maybe a little windy, but wow. Nice that the rains stayed away for a change :-)
--
On Friday we're back into District play as we welcome the Lee Lancers into
Jimmy Miller Stadium. The Liberty District is very competitive this year,
so every game is crucial. The defense will be put to the test on Friday since
Lee's key returning players this year both play attack, and both are seniors.
We'll all got to be there to show our support and cheer the Statesmen on.
Friday, April 24!

MCLEAN LOSES TO MARSHALL ON LAST-MINUTE GOAL
View From The Stands:
--
It was another extremely close contest in Liberty District play as the
Statesmen traveled to McLean to take on the previously-unbeaten Highlanders.
Once again, the game was decided on a last-minute goal, but this time it was
Marshall's Joe Milosavich who netted the game winner - with just 1:38 left
on the clock - and the Statesmen brought home the win with a final score of 16-15.
--
We came into this game missing two of Marshall's regulars on defense: goalie
Sean Delean and defenseman Neil Kearns. The defense started flat, while
the Highlanders brought out a new style of offense that they've
been playing this year under first-year Head Coach R.T. Agnew. They've had a lot
of success with this more aggressive, quick-shooting style, and the Highlanders
started off with a couple of quick goals against the Statesman D.
--
It took the defense mid-way through the second quarter to shake off the rust,
but shake it off they did under the leadership of Tom Grattan,
Sean Horvath, and Jonathan Horner.
Fortunately, the Marshall offense kept pace with McLean, scoring seven goals
in the second quarter and giving us a one-goal lead at the half.
--
The momentum in the second half kept switching back and forth, and things were
starting to look bleak when McLean took a two-goal lead with just seven minutes left
in the game. But the Statesmen never let up and battled back to tie the game
with less than four minutes to go on a goal by Phil Sellery. Then
with 1:38 on the clock, Joe Milosavich hit the goal that would prove to
be the game winner. Marshall's defense stepped up big in the closing seconds
of play as McLean pressed an all-out attack, with sophomore goalie Chris Brimsek
making a couple of huge saves and Chris Hunter clearing the ball to seal the victory.
--
It was an extremely hard-fought contest. Joe Milosavich scored a
career-high seven goals in the effort - with Phil Sellery adding
five more, Chris Hunter scoring three, and Mark Gentry netting one.
Coach Holman reports that Joe Milosavich earned the game ball, but it was the
teamwork of the entire squad that earned this important win
over a vastly-improved Highlanders team.
--
"Spring Break comes at a very crucial time," says Coach Holman, "as many players
are nursing injuries." With any luck, we'll be at full strength when we come back
for our non-conference game against Washington-Lee. Be there, everyone, to
show your support as we start the second half of the season! Wednesday, April 23!

MARSHALL LOSES TO MADISON ON LAST-MINUTE GOAL
View From The Stands:
--
Madison scored the game-winning goal with just 33 seconds left in the game,
breaking a 9-9 tie in an amazing, hard-fought contest. "This is one of the most
exciting games I've ever been a part of," said Coach Holman. "Of course, you'd
rather be on the winning side in a game like this, but it really shows how
close we are to taking that next step." The Statesmen midfield played well,
despite being on the field for long periods of time. They gave the team everything
they had, and it showed. The defense did a good job on the ground balls, and
cleared the crease well with some big hits. The attack got us some big goals when
we needed them, and kept the pressure on the Warhawks goalie throughout the game.
--
The Statesmen scoring came from a solid balance of midfielders and attack:
Chris Hunter, Francis Vinh, and co-captains Phil Sellery and Joe Milosavich
all lit up the scoreboard. On defense, View From The Stands saw
several outstanding plays by Jon Horner, Neil Kearns, co-captain Tom Grattan,
and Russell Jacobs.
--
Coach Holman singled out the play of sophomore goalie Chris Brimsek, who took over
as Marshall's starting goalkeeper after Sean Delean had to travel out of town. Chris was
brought up from the JV team just days before the game, and played big in his
first game with the varsity squad, and of course, his first varsity start. He did a great
job of clearing the ball (many casual LAX fans don't realize how important -
and difficult - it is to clear the ball from the defensive zone) and made several spectacular saves, including a monster shot from point-blank range, one-on-one
against one of Madison's best attackmen.
"Chris was put in a tough position," aid Coach Holman, "and he rose to the challenge."
--
Sounds to me like everyone stepped it up a notch in a close-fought contest.
Next week is another tough matchup as we travel to McLean to take on the
red-hot Highlanders, who are off to a 4-0 start under new Head Coach RT Agnew.
Bring the children, bring the family ... but most of all, bring your support and your
Statesmen Pride! B THERE!

3/27/03 - TC Williams High School
STATESMEN BEAT THE TITANS, 14-2
View From The Stands:
--
In a hard-fought contest against a very physical TC Williams team, the Marshall
Statesmen were impressive in a 14-2 victory on the road. Both the offense and defense
showed finesse, balance, and sheer determination to overcome one of the rougher, more
physically demanding teams seen by the Statesmen so far. Scoring for this game came
from the well-balanced starting attack line: Phil Sellery scored five goals,
Joe Milosavich also netted five, and Mark Gentry added the other four.
--
On defense, Tom Grattan, Russell Jacobs and Jonathon Horner all played a strong and
spirited game, allowing very few shots on goal. Sean Horvath and Neil Kearns made
significant contributions on defense as well. Goalminder Sean Delean earned his second
Varsity victory, with several good saves and precise outlet passing on clears.
--
Midfielder Kent Miller was another key to the Statesmen's success, winning several
tough face-offs, with a lot of help from starting midfielders Brandon Duval and
Chris Hunter. Unfortunately, Duval suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter(!),
and had to sit out the remainder of the game. We don't have specific information
about the injury just yet, but it sure looked painful and we all wish Brandon a speedy
recovery! Philip Hinkel, Francis Vinh, Jim Stephens, and Sharif Sabur also made
significant contributions from their midfield positions.
--
While this was a physically demanding game for the Statesmen, the win demonstrated the
value of fundamentals and experience. And it should help build a foundation of
confidence: TC Williams came into this game with a 2-0 record under head coach
Charlie Juris, who has more than 30 years of LAX coaching experience and who is having
some real success in his second year of rebuilding the Titans program. The Statesmen
met the challenge with poise and determination, and came away with the win.
--
Wednesday is the rescheduled non-conference game against Wakefield (Varsity only),
and Friday we're up against Madison--which already has two quality wins over Chantilly
and Fairfax. The Warhawks will be coming off their Tuesday game against Regional
powerhouse Oakton, so we'll need the full effect of our home field advantage this year.
So everyone: BE THERE!

STATESMEN TAKE SEASON OPENER OVER JEB STUART!
View From The Stands:
--
In the opening game of Marshall's 2003 season, the Statesmen
scored an impressive 25-0 victory over the visiting JEB Stuart Raiders.
Junior Mark Gentry and senior captain Phil Sellery led the scoring with
five goals each, and Sean Delean earned the shutout in goal.
--
"It was evident that it was our first game," said Coach Holman,
"because the beginning of the game was a little sloppy.
Once we settled down, though, we were able to work the ball around pretty well
and get some good shots off."
The Coach also complimented the defense - doing a good job on the clears
gave the offense a lot of fast break opportunities.
(I can never keep that straight - is it that the best offense is a good defense?
Or the best defense is a good offense? Either way, it's clear the Statesmen
played well on both sides of the field.)
--
Last year's scoring leader Phil Sellery got the first goal of the season,
and the Statesmen sprinted to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.
By the end of the game, a total of nine Marshall players would end up in the scoring
column, including all of the attackmen (Gentry, Sellery, Blair Machado and senior captain
Joe Milosavich) and about half of the Statesmen midfielders
(Brandon Duval, Chris Hunter, Kent Miller, Sharif Sabur and Francis Vinh).
--
Marshall's success in this game was established with a good focus on fundamentals:
we were winning the faceoffs, running strong offensive plays and taking
advantage of opportunities with fast breaks and good passing.
The defense, led by senior captain Tom Grattan, held the Raiders scoreless
and looked strong throughout the game - allowing very few shots, earning several
takeaways and recovering most groundballs. Defensemen Russell Jacobs and
Jonathon Horner excelled with aggressive checks and quick stick-handling, and
Sean Delean was steady in goal.
--
Marshall's experience showed in this win over a much younger Raiders squad
(15 of Marshall's 20 players are seniors), but it's clear that we still have a lot
of work ahead of us if we're going to improve on our record from last year.
"TC Williams," Coach Holman explains, "will be a bigger test for us.
The Titans are currently 2-0 and have improved vastly from last year."
The game is Thursday. Be there!

EARLY-SEASON RESULTS
Coach Williams says the Statesmen did
very well in our Varsity scrimmage at Flint Hill.
(Although, as a controlled scrimmage, there was no real final score.)
Unfortunately, rain and thunderstorms have dominated the season so far.
The Varsity season-opener at Wakefield, the Stone Bridge Varsity scrimmage,
the JV game against Hayfield
and the JV dual-scrimmage against Hayfield and Madison
were all canceled due to bad weather and field conditions!
