MADISON PREVAILS IN DISTRICT PLAYOFF GAME
Ahhh, as the regular season winds down, our Statesmen lacrosse squad turned to the first round of the Liberty District playoffs. We knew it would be tough. The Liberty District is stronger this year--from top to bottom--than any other District in the Northern Virginia Region. And stronger than it's ever been. We knew we'd have our work cut out for us going up against the Warhawks squad. And we've been undermanned a lot at the end of this year. Indeed, we were only able to dress 15 Varsity players for this playoff game. (And for those of you on the sidelines who were counting, yes, Madison had about 30-40 in Warhawks pads.)
-- Of course, Marshall LAX never shies away from a tough challenge! There's no lack of determination in this squad!
-- As befits any good playoff game, our Statesmen came out strong--playing hard, digging for every loose ball, and pushing every faceoff just as tough and hard as we could. Marshall kept it close at the beginning, closing to 5-2 on a pair of lightning-quick goals. One came on a slashing goal by Senior Co-Captain Mark Gentry from right in front of the crease--the other on a beautiful fast-break finisher by Sophomore Aria Kavyani.
-- The Statesmen gave it everything they had--and then reached down deep to get some more. But sometime in the third quarter, we just ran out of legs (so to speak). Madison took advantage, and pulled away to win it by a final score of 13-2.
-- Disappointing result, but hard-fought all the way. View From The Stands tells me that the Statesmen squad was noteworthy for its pride, determination and hard work out there. No backing down--not for a minute.
-- Thanks, Statesmen lacrosse! In fact, thanks for a terrific year, and congratulations for everything you accomplished. Marshall Pride!

MCLEAN TAKES REGULAR-SEASON FINALE OVER MARSHALL
The fastest sport on two feet! We knew going into this game that McLean has improved dramatically over last year. (Their new head coach, Cabell Maddux, was a 2-time all-American on Hobart's NCAA national championship squad, then went on to become head coach of the German National Team for three years, and three more years as head coach at St. John's.) The Highlanders brought back almost every starter from last year's team, and the difference has been huge. In 2003, McLean went 0-7 in District play. In 2004, they're 11-3 overall.
-- The JV squad--playing last Friday until the thunderstorms hit--kept the game close through the fourth quarter against a very strong team. Frankly, the JV has improved quite a bit this year. After getting off to a rebuilding-year kind of start, the Statesmen JV is really coming around--playing tougher and better as the schedule and opponents got strongest at the very end of the year.
-- Varsity, on the other hand, felt the effects of illness and injury again. Neil Kearns was out so the Statesmen defense had a big job on their hands--especially up against the vastly-improved McLean attack. Jake Oster got one of the Marshall goals, with Mark Gentry on the assist. Pat Findaro got a goal, with Brian Montanio getting the assist on that one. And Mark Gentry closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal of his own.
-- District playoffs start on Wednesday. 7:00 PM at Madison.

WOODSON PREVAILS IN SATURDAY MAKEUP GAME
JV played a hard game and played well on defense. Score at the half was 4-0. John Almquist had a strong game at long stick defense and Steven Armstrong was solid in Goal with a lot of saves.
-- Varsity was again undermanned. Dan Rafeedie and Workman were out again with injuries and Bryan Montanio was also unavailable. Chris Brimsek was in Goal and Sean Delean played attack. Chris played well to hold Woodson to 14 goals. The lone Marshall goal was scored by Aria Kavyani with an assist from Mark Gentry.
-- The next game is the last regular season game at McLean on Friday, May 7. Game times are 5:30 and 7:15.

SENIOR NIGHT AT MADISON GAME, BUT WARHAWKS PREVAIL
Marshall honored its Seniors and their parents before the Madison game on Thursday. Seniors in their last season for the Statesmen include Co-Captains Mark Gentry and Neil Kearns, Goalie Sean Delean, defensemen Andrew Kotliar, Brad Workman and Paul Truong, and mid-fielders Francis Vinh, Dan Rafeedie, and Bryan Montanio. Many of these Seniors have played for four years and will be missed in 2005. These Senior Statesmen have represented George C. Marshall Lacrosse with pride and determination--thank you!
-- The game proved to be another difficult contest in this year's extremely competitive Liberty District. The Statesmen got off to a slow start and the Warhawks' put a huge number of shots on goal in the first half. Even though Sean Delean made a lot of great saves, the Madison offense was relentless. Jake Oster scored Marshall's only goal in that first half, and the Statesmen trailed, 7-1, at halftime.
-- In the second half, Marshall had a number of scoring opportunities and took good shots, but Madison's goalie, Mann, kept coming up with the quality saves. On offense, the Warhawks capitalized on broken clears, and scored several times in in transition. Mark Gentry scored Marshall's second goal in the fourth period to make the final score 15-2.
-- Injuries again had a significant effect on the Statesmen lineup. Brad Workman was on the sidelines for this game, and Dan Rafeedie wasn't able to play at 100%. Back-up goalie Chris Brimsek even took off the pads and played some minutes on defense in the second half to rest the defensive starters.
-- The final home game is Saturday, May 1, for the re-scheduled Woodson game. UPDATE: Times for the Woodson game are now 3:00 PM for the JV and 4:40 PM for the Varsity.
-- Hey, it's gonna be gorgeous out - what a great day for lacrosse! Be There!

GAME NOTES FROM LANGLEY
The JV lost 17-0 in a game shortened in the fourth quarter by lightning. The Varsity lost 14-1 in a one-sided game in which the Statesmen struggled to overcome challenges that came from all over the field. The lone GCM goal was scored by Jake Oster. Dan Rafeedie was out with an injury and couldn't play. Not sure whether he'll be 100% for the game on Thursday, or whether he'll be able to play at all.
-- Thursday night is Senior Night for the home game against Madison. (It's Senior Night because it was originally scheduled as the final home game of the year.) As usual, game times are 5:30 for the JV and 7:15 for the Varsity. Everyone be there for this matchup against the Warhawks!

TOUGH LOSS AGAINST FAIRFAX
The fastest sport on two feet! It was a tough night in the usually-friendly confines of Jimmy Miller Stadium. Fairfax has fielded one of its best teams in years - vying for the top spot with Woodson - and simply played a great game against us.
-- We struggled throughout the first half. The Statesmen created several good scoring chances, but saw them slip away when our shots bounced off the post or were snagged by good goalie play. We also gave up several errant goals. We just couldn't get on track - on either offense or defense - and the Rebels were up 10-zip at the half.
-- The coaches made some key adjustments and our Statesmen started the second half with a renewed sense of purpose. The defense turned up the pressure, the offense started to click, and with Mark Gentry's goal the Statesmen played the Rebels to a hard-fought 1-1 tie for the third quarter. Unfortunately, Fairfax scored the final 5 goals of the game to make the score 16-1. It was a tough loss, but the intensity of this Marshall team was evident throughout the game.
-- Game Notes: Chris Brimsek started in goal and gave way to Sean Delean in the fourth quarter. Brad Workman had one of his best efforts on defense. And Jake Oster, one of our top two scorers, wasn't able to play today because of an injury.
-- Friday night we're at home again against Woodson in another tough conference match-up. Game times are 5:30 for the JV and 7:15 for the Varsity.

MARSHALL IS 5-1 AFTER WIN OVER SOUTH LAKES
After taking a 16-7 win in a high-scoring contest over the Seahawks at South Lakes, our Marshall Statesmen are now 5-1 for the year and 2-0 in District play.
-- The Statesmen started strong and jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Seahawks. In the second quarter, South Lakes scored 2, to pull within 1, but then the Marshall offense got it rolling again and went on to take a 7-3 half-time lead. In the second half, our Statesmen never let up--either on offense or defense--and the final score showed the results: Marshall over South Lakes, 16-7.
-- GCM dominated both ends of the field and maintained ball possession throughout the game. Pat Findaro won 5 face-offs; Dan Rafeedie and Aria Kavyani were also strong in facing off. Andrew Kotlier snapped up 7 ground balls and Findaro picked up 5. Offensively, the Statesmen displayed good teamwork - scoring on fast breaks and from their set offense. The 16 goals were supported by a whopping 12 assists. There were a couple of lapses on defense, but overall the Marshall defense played well and the goalies had a very good game.
-- Sean Delean started in crease and had 9 saves before getting relieved by Chris Brimsek in the fourth quarter. Chris played well and hauled in 5 saves in the time remaining. Meanwhile, Sean took off his goalie gear and came out to play attack - scoring 2 goals during his quarter on the other end of the field.
-- Marshall Goals: Mark Gentry (4, w/4 assists), Francis Vinh (4), Jake Oster (3, w/4 assists), Sean Delean (2), Pat Findaro (1, w/2 assists), Aria Kavyani (1, w/1 assist), Brian Montanio (1), Brandon Stratz (1 assist).
-- On Wednesday, we're at home against the highly-ranked Fairfax Rebels in a game rescheduled from last week - it will be the second of three District games this week. On Friday, we're home against the top-ranked Woodson Cavaliers. Game times on Wednesday are 5:30 for the JV and 7:15 for the Varsity.

BEST EFFORT THIS YEAR, GCM OVER LEE 8-3
The game was low scoring and the Statesmen started slowly. After allowing the first goal, GCM played good defense and steadily pulled away in the second half. Chris Brimsek played the entire game in goal and had 12 saves. Dan Rafeedie scored his first goal of the season (and the first of his LAX career!).
-- Overall, it was a terrific effort. Coach Williams says it was probably one of our best all-around games this year (see View From The Sidelines, under NEWZ & NOTES).
-- Marshall Goals: Mark Gentry (2, w/2 assists), Jake Oster (2), Aria Kavyani (2), Brian Montanio (1 assist), Francis Vinh (1 assist), Pat Findaro (1), Dan Rafeedie (1).
-- During the week of 4/19, we've got three games in five days... and the level of competition is definitely getting tougher. Monday we're at home against South Lakes - April 19. Game times are 5:30 for the JV and 7:15 for the Varsity.

STATESMEN EARN TOUGH WIN AT EDISON, 13-9
The Statesmen never trailed in this hard-fought game. We jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, and extended it to go ahead 6-3 at the half. At one point in the third quarter, the Statesmen lead was five - then Edison rallied to make a comeback. Edison scored four to close to within one goal in the fourth quarter, making it 9-8, but then Marshall came roaring back and closed out the game with four goals to give us a final score of 13-9.
-- The game was very physical and Edison had 14 penalties while Marshall had 6. Francis Vinh suffered an injury, but we're certainly hoping that he's healing quickly and will be back soon. (Thank goodness for the spring break!) Dan Rafeedie did an excellent job in shutting down one of Edison's top attack men and Sean Delean had a strong game in goal. Although Edison scored two shorthanded goals in the fourth quarter, the Statesmen never lost their composure and came back after Edison narrowed the score.
-- Mark Gentry and Jake Oster led the Statesmen scoring attack, with Mark getting 7 goals and 1 assist, and Jake putting in 5. Brian Montanio tallied 1 goal and 1 assist. Dan Rafeedie and Francis Vinh also put up assists (1 each), and Pat Findaro had 2 assists.
-- The next game is at home after the Spring break, against Fairfax - Tuesday, April 13. Game times are 5:30 for the JV and 7:15 for the Varsity.

STATESMEN PREVAIL OVER FALLS CHURCH, 14-8
The Statesmen started slow, but were able to capture a small early lead and hang onto it throughout the first half. The offense missed a couple of transition scoring opportunities and the defense gave up a few transition goals and we weren't able to pull away. Sean Delean had a solid game in goal with several key saves in that sluggish first half.
-- In the second half the Statesmen did a good job of clearing, and scoring in transition. Marshall took control of this game and drove aggressively to earn a final score of 14-8. While the Statesmen haven't yet played their best Lacrosse, the level of play is clearly improving with every game.
-- Marshall Goals: Mark Gentry (4, w/2 assists), Francis Vinh (3, w/2 assists), Jake Oster (3, w/1 assist), Brian Montanio (2, w/1 assist), Aria Kavyani (1, w/1 assist), Kyle Montanio (2 assists).
-- The next game is Wednesday, March 31, at Edison. JV starts at 5:30 and the Varsity at 7:15.

STATESMEN RALLY TO BEAT HAYFIELD, 14-13
After a sluggish first half and with Marshall down by six goals (3-9), the Statesmen staged an amazing comeback by tightening their defense and revving up the offense - scoring four goals in the third quarter and exploding for seven more in the fourth! Co-Captain Mark Gentry scored the go-ahead goal with just a little over 30 seconds left on the clock.
-- Marshall, a young team this year with only nine seniors on the roster, faced a bigger and faster team in the first half and was in danger of losing top scorer Gentry who was temporarily sidelined with an injury at face-off early in the third quarter. Credit for the turnaround seven goals in the fourth quarter can be shared by Gentry, Oster, Vinh and Montanio. Oster scored first, followed by Vinh with an assist by Gentry, then Oster with another Gentry assist. The game closed in a thrilling fashion with three straight unassisted goals by Montanio, Vinh and Gentry.
-- The Defense played a critical role in this comeback. The Statesmen D really stepped it up in the second half - stopping Hayfield and holding them to just four goals. Kearns, Workman and Kotliar were standouts as ironmen on defense, playing without relief.
-- I have to add that everyone was quite concerned at halftime when Defenseman Nick Horner suffered what was evidently a serious medical problem. Coach Williams, we were all pleased to see, attended to Nick and made sure that Nick got the necessary attention (we certainly don't have the medical details, but we've heard some positive reports and everyone wishes Nick a speedy recovery)!
-- While Coach Williams was seeing to Nick, Marshall's Assistant Coach Vik Ohri put in an outstanding performance - taking control on the sidelines, making sure everyone knew what to do, and putting the Statesmen in position to control the final outcome of the game. Under Coach Ohri's guiding hand, the Marshall players responded with an outstanding effort to earn the hard-fought come-from-behind win.
-- Marshall Goals: Mark Gentry (5, w/2 assists), Jake Oster (3), Aria Kavyani (2), Francis Vinh (2), Patrick Findaro (1), Brian Montanio (1), Dan Rafeedie (1 assist).
-- The next game is Monday, March 29 against Falls Church at home. JV starts at 5:30 and the Varsity at 7:15.

STATESMEN LOSE FIRST MATCH TO GEORGE MASON
The Statesmen lost their first-played game with George Mason on March 22 by a score of 11 to 9. The Statesmen played hard and the score was always close. But George Mason is a senior-laden team and responded effectively in this pressure-packed contest.
-- Marshall's season opener with Edison last week was postponed due to poor playing conditions. It will be made up on Wednesday, March 31.

3/15/04 - Chantilly High School
EARLY-SEASON RESULTS
The two scrimmages against Heritage and Trinity were both canceled (weather and field conditions got in the way). This left us with just one scrimmage in the entire pre-season when the Statesmen travelled to Chantilly.
-- View From The Stands tells us the Statesmen had a good and productive outing against Chantilly. It was a controlled scrimmage with separate results tracked and recorded for each quarter (like four separate mini-games). In the Varsity scrimmage, Marshall won two and Chantilly won two, and the total number of goals scored in all four quarters was very close (the Chargers scored 12 and the Statesmen scored 11). Of course in this type of format, there was no "final" score. The Varsity played quite well in the two quarters they won, but the JV struggled a bit - this was the first game-type conditions for many of the JV players.
