2004 All Liberty District Awards
CHRIS BRIMSEK - Honorable Mention - Goalie
AARON HEMEON - Honorable Mention - Midfield
JAKE OSTER - Honorable Mention - Attack
-- CONGRATULATIONS
To all of our award-winners!
Those of you who watch the polls know that the Liberty District was
extremely competitive this year--with teams from our District
finishing the regular season #1, #2 and #5 in the entire AAA Northern Region.
In a year like this, the All-District spots were extremely difficult.
To see Marshall represented on that list--and with not just a Senior but also a
Sophomore and a Freshman on the list--it's terrific recognition for the great year
that Chris had, and it's also a nice look forward to some of our exceptional
underclassmen and the future of our program.
And of course, in addition to the individual honors, we all know that it's a
team effort out there--the successes of the individuals reflect on the work and
success of the team as a whole.
--
Congratulations, Statesmen!

STATESMEN PLAY STRONG IN PLAYOFFS, BUT FALL TO MCLEAN
It was quite a year for lacrosse at George C. Marshall.
A tough year - no question - in terms of raw wins and losses.
But this group of players has come so far from the opening moments of pre-season practice.
Throughout the season, we played solid, competitive LAX in what turned out to be the
strongest district in the entire Northern Region.
--
How strong was the Liberty District this year? Perhaps this tells a bit of the story:
McLean finished third in the Liberty District. Tellingly, the Highlanders were
seeded third in the Regional playoffs.
--
Even though the final game of the season was a home loss to McLean, our Marshall Statesmen
came to Highlanders stadium for the opening round of the District playoffs with confidence
and a renewed sense of determination that we were going to turn around that defeat
and pull out a Win against McLean. There is no backing down on this Statesmen squad.
We've come too far and accomplished too much.
--
Chris Brimsek had an absolutely terrific night in goal (check out the photos below!),
and View From The Stands wishes Chris the very best of luck as he moves on
to play the Fastest Sport On Two Feet at the collegiate level. Chris will be playing
on the nationally-ranked squad over at Washington & Lee, alongside several other
Marshall alumni). We know he'll do great there as well.
--
Unfortunately, McLean's high-powered offense had a better night of it tonight
than the Statesmen did. Each team had scoring chances, but the Highlanders were able
to find the back of the net just that many more times. Final score: McLean 11, Marshall 6.
--
Congratulations are well deserved, however, to a strong Marshall squad that made the
playoffs in the Region's toughest District ... to the Seniors who provided leadership and
determination throughout the season ... to the Underclassmen who gained invaluable
experience and played their guts out against the Districts older and more-seasoned squads ...
to the Coaches who made this all possible ... and of course to the entire Marshall LAX
community - including players, coaches, parents, family and fans - who give so much, and who
get back tenfold in return. Congratulations to you all. And thanks for all your
hard work and dedication throughout the year.

SENIOR-NIGHT HONORS AT MCLEAN GAME
It was quite a night for lacrosse at Marshall's last home
game of the year. It was also quite a night for memories, as George C. Marshall high school
took the opportunity to honor not only the Seniors who have been a critical part of
the Statesmen LAX program, but also the proud parents of this Senior LAX class.
--
As everyone in high school sports knows (or at least everyone involved with GCM
knows :-), the parents of our student athletes make a huge difference to our sports
programs, and to the GCM community overall. It was a wonderful night as each one of our
Seniors escorted their parents down the track at Jimmy Miller Stadium on Senior Night.
--
McLean finished the season ranked #5 in the AAA Northern Region. Like we've said before,
the Liberty District was extraordinarily competitive this year, with
Woodson and Langley taking the #1 and #2 spots.
--
The Highlanders Varsity played very well tonight, and yet the Statesmen offense
blasted in 6 scores past the McLean goalkeeper.
The JV contest was extremely tight - a low-scoring event that finished 5-3 in favor
of the Bad Guys - and all the Statesmen played with
pride and determination in both games. GCM was well represented tonight,
and the success of the GCM lacrosse program was in the air.
--
Congratulations to GCM lacrosse for a terrific, hard-fought season.
And congratulations to the Seniors for all they did for us.
And thanks - to all the Marshall fans who came out and supported us throughout
the year.
--
And yes, we made the Liberty District playoffs. They begin on Wednesday. At McLean
again. Marshall Pride! Go Statesmen

MADISON TAKES TWO FROM OUR STATESMEN
Vienna's traditional cross-town rivalry went to the lacrosse field at
Warhawks stadium on Monday night. Final score for the JV opener was 11-1 in favor
of Madison; final score in the Varsity game favored the Warhawks, 15-5.
--
No matter what it said on the scoreboard, this game - like every game between the Statesmen and the
Warhawks - was hard fought and much much closer than it looked.
That's just how this series goes.
--
I don't have any of the play by play, but View From The Stands made a special
point to highlight how well the team did on groundballs and takeaways...
I can't stress enough how important each change of possession is, and
how much that's tied to good old-fashioned Hard Work.
--
The Warhawks had a better game of it tonight - no doubt about it, and certainly
no excuses - but the Statesmen got their chances as well, and the Marshall goals
were entirely fun and hard-earned events. Junior Casey Williams put up 2 goals
on the Statesmen side of the scoreboard, and Freshman phenom Aaron Hemeon notched
up 3 of his own.
--
Those of you who were wondering about the new number in goal... that was Kevin Hia,
who got called up from the JV squad to fill in for downed Co-Captain Chris Brimsek.
The doctors said Chris wasn't ready to play yet, so the Sophomore goalkeeper
came in for his first Varsity game of the year and put in a solid performance.
--
Wow - quite a night, and the Marshall team never gave up throughout the game.
--
Friday is Senior Night at home against McLean.
Be there Statesmen fans!

BOTH SQUADS HAVE TOUGH NIGHT VS. LANGLEY
Well, if you like scoring... or if you like Langley(!!)...
then tonight's games went pretty well.
But for Statesmen fans, it got a little ugly. :-)
--
Frankly, Langley and Woodson are currently battling it out for the top spot
in the entire AAA Northern Region. In back-to-back games against these two
Region leaders, we got to see first-hand just what types of teams they are.
Our Statesmen pulled out all the stops, and played with lots of determination,
but the final scores against both of these opponents favored the Other Side.
--
I don't have much detail from the JV game yet, but View From The Stands
tells me that our Varsity played a VERY competitive game against the Saxons
for the entire first quarter. But then things kind of broke down at bit, and when
it broke, it broke big.
--
Again, we've got great photos - so many that we've divided 'em into two separate pages (again :-).
One for the JV game and the other for the Varsity.
The Statesman in this photo is Aaron Hemeon, a Freshman on the Varsity squad who's
already turning in a ton of productive minutes.

CAVS TAKE A PAIR FROM OUR STATESMEN
I don't have lots of detail, but I've got photos.
The larger set is coming soon, but the picture at left (from the JV game)
tells my favorite part of the story:
--
There's no quit in these Statesmen! When it came to just plain pride,
and determination, and attitude ... the Statesmen and Cavaliers ran together
stride for stride.
--
But you've gotta give Woodson their due: Man, they played really well.
They're a terrific team and they gave us difficult matchups all over the field.
No Excuses for the end results - The Cavs played really well.
But no reason to hang our heads either. We were out there workin' hard
and givin' our all.
--
By the way, the Statesman in that photo is Michael Born, another of the outstanding
Freshmen that came out for GCM's Lacrosse program in 2005. (These guys are good!)
--
On Friday, we come back home to host the Langley Saxons.
It's all about the pride! Be there!

STATESMEN WIN BIG OVER THE SEAHAWKS
Another gorgeous night for lacrosse, and the Statesmen came out
like gangbusters.
--
The first quarter score was something like 5-0 and I think the score at halftime
was 8-1. The rest of the game wasn't quite as high-scoring as the
first half, but it was exciting and hard fought all night long.
--
GREAT hitting, GREAT defense, TERRIFIC goalie work, and man we were hustling
hard on every single play. View From The Stands had a terrific time
out there at Jimmy Miller stadium tonight. (Thanks, everyone!)
--
The picture at left shows Senior Co-Captain Chris Brimsek in goal, facing
a Seahawks attackman who's loading up for a sidearm blast through traffic.
As you can see, Chris sees little more than just a glimpse of the shot as
it sets up. Just amazing!
--
And while we're spotting players-in-the-pix, that's big Griffin Cummins rushing out
to meet the South Lakes attacker head on. Griffin's one of six Freshmen
playing on the Varsity squad this year.

Next Monday we're on the road against Woodson. The Cavs have a good squad
and this is gonna be a challenge.

FOURTH-RANKED REBELS TAKE A PAIR OVER STATESMEN
It was a gorgeous night for watching a lacrosse game -
beautiful weather, and the extra sunshine we get from Daylight Savings Time
made the view from the top of Jimmy Miller Stadium just spectacular. We gotta
get out like this more often, ya know!
--
The tough part, of course, is that our Statesmen were hosting the fourth-ranked
Fairfax Rebels, and we knew we were gonna have to bring our A game - and stay focused
all night long.
--
The Statesmen JV squad got off to a slow start against the Rebels, and by halftime
we were already down by a 5-1 score. Fairfax controlled the ball for much of that
first half, and they really got a lot of shots on goal. The first-half Marshall goal
was blasted past the Rebels goalkeeper by Sophomore Ben Yazman.
In the second half our Statesmen defense really tightened up and we held the Rebels
to just two more goals for the rest of the game. The Statesmen offense also got in
gear and we outscored the Rebels in that second half (3-2). Freshman Michael Born
scored twice in the half and Sophomore Sam Mencarini put in the other.
The final score was 7-4, Fairfax.
--
Brian Ritchey, Christopher Newcomb and Daniel Nguyen played well at defense and
Kevin Hia had another strong game in goal, especially in the second half. Another
good effort by the JV despite the loss.
--
The Varsity had a tough game against a strong Fairfax team. In the first half
Fairfax had control of the face-offs and thus had the ball for most of the half.
The Rebels put a lot of shots on goal and led at the half by a score of 6-0.
In the second half Fairfax extended its lead to 11-1 with the lone Statesmen goal
being scored unassisted by Aaron Hemeon. In the fourth quarter Casey Williams
scored two goals - with assists from Jake Oster and Ryan Jarriel. But Fairfax
continued to control the face-offs and that limited the number of Statesmen possessions.
By a lot. Chris Brimsek faced a barrage of shots and had a solid game in goal.
Final score in the Varsity contest was 12-3.
--
It was a difficult night out there, but our Statesmen played with pride and
determination throughout.
--
Also, because people have been asking about the ambulance... that was Sophomore
John Inglesby who was injured and taken to the hospital. We haven't heard how
he's doing yet, but we're all hoping for a speedy recovery and hope to see #29
back in the lineup real soon.
--
Next Tuesday we're at home again against Lee - it should be a terrific pair of
games against these Liberty District opponents. Marshall Pride!

VARSITY IMPROVES TO 2-2 WITH WIN OVER EAGLES
Wow. This is why they call it the fastest sport on two feet!
The JV dropped a tough one, but the Varsity evened their record to 2-2 on a
sparkling 10-goal effort against the visiting Edison Eagles.
--
In the JV opener, the Statesmen offense started slowly and was down 4-0 at the half.
Kevin Hia played a strong first half in goal, and a strong game overall,
but the Eagles were just bringing too much too fast. After an early third quarter
goal put the Eagles up 5-0, the Statesmen rallied and started taking the offense
to Edison. For the rest of the night, the two squads pretty much traded goals -
but of course Edison's big lead held up.
--
Final score was 10-3, but our View From The Stands already sees that this
JV squad is playing with a lot more confidence than earlier in the season. Very cool.
--
The Varsity game was just plain fun from start to finish.
Marshall showed off a nicely balanced offense as seven Statesmen scored against
the Eagles. The defense was clicking as well, and after a strong first half our
Statesmen were up 5-1. (The lone Eagles' goal was scored on a man-down play.)
The second half brought more of the same - strong and consistent play, good balance
overall, and lots of the Marshall players got to see playing time in that
second half.
--
Chris Brimsek had another solid game in goal and the Marshall Defense played very well.
Nick Horner, Griffen Cummins and Mark Findaro at defense, and Kevin Wiencek at
long-stick middie all had strong games. Pat Findaro had an exceptionally good game
controlling the always-important faceoffs.
--
Jake Oster had 4 goals and six other players got on the scoreboard with one goal each:
Pat Findaro, Aaron Hemeon, John Ingelsby, Ryan Jarriel, Kyle Montanio and Casey Williams.
Aria Kavyani picked up two assists in this game, and Pat Findaro and Aaron Hemeon got credited with one assist each.
--
The Fairfax game has been moved up to Wednesday. View From The Stands is
guessing that something's wrong with the Fairfax field, because it also got switched from an Away game to a Home game. So Jimmy Miller Stadium beckons on Wednesday night!
Be there! Marshall Pride!

JV PICKS UP A "W" OVER JAGUARS
What an exciting night of lacrosse when the Statesmen traveled to
Falls Church to take on the rapidly-improving Jaguars.
--
Both games were close, and the JV had us on the edge of our seats when the Statesmen
went into halftime with a slim one-goal lead. The JV's already made a lot of progress
this year, and View From The Stands was hoping that they'd be able to build on this
lead for our first win of the JV season. Sure enough, a few minutes into the third
quarter Sam Mencarini scored to put Marshall up by a 3-1 score. The Statesmen
offense got on the board another time to put up what we hoped would be a commanding
4-1 lead. But the Jags came back to make it 4-2 and we were back on the edge of
our seats again. It wasn't until late in the fourth quarter that the last goal
of the game gave the Statesmen an important insurance goal, making the final score
5-2 - Marshall over Falls Church.
--
Kevin Hia played a very good game in goal with quite a few critical saves,
and it was definitely nice to get the seasons' first W.
--
The Varsity game was also quite close and we were on the edge of our seats (yet again)
as the Statesmen trailed by one at halftime, 4-5. The third quarter was a defensive
battle, with Marshall shutting out Falls Church in the quarter, while the Statesmen
offense scored two to take a one goal lead going into the final and critical fourth.
Statesmen up, 6-5.
--
The Marshall Defense and Goalie Chris Brimsek came up huge at the start of the
fourth quarter - killing a three-minute, non-releasable penalty for an illegal stick.
But after coming out of the penalty unscathed, the final six minutes of the game were
brutal. The floodgates seemed to open and the Jaguars poured in five unanswered
goals for a 10-6 final score.
--
Wow. Pat Findaro led the Statesmen scoring with 3 goals, Jake Oster hit for 2, and
Aaron Hemeon got one. Tough result after a well-played game. But everyone in the
stands knew it was a close one.

On Monday, we host Edison from the National District.
