STATESMEN BEAT LEE IN 7-6 THRILLER
In the regular-season finale, played on a spectacular night for
lacrosse at Lee High School, the vastly-improved Lee Lancers and our own Marshall
Statesmen played an amazing game that was every bit as close
as the 7-6 score would indicate.
--
The Lancers came out firing from the start and before we really had a chance
to catch our breath, the scoreboard showed a 2-zip lead in Lee's favor! As the teams
traded possessions (and as the Statesmen faithful moved a little closer towards the edge
of their seats), you got a sense that the Marshall squad was taking control out there,
but it wasn't showing on the scoreboard yet. Suddenly, the shots started going in ...
We tied it up on two quick goals, then broke ahead for two more.
--
It seemed like we were winning every face-off and picking up every loose
ball, but just as quickly as the Marshall shots had started finding the net, now they
began missing the net. We had a bunch of quality scoring chances out there,
but our shots seemed to be sailing just inches wide, or bouncing just a little too high.
And sure enough, the Lancers started to come back. But after trading goals for a bit,
our Statesmen seemed to go into Won't-Be-Denied mode. The offense was just
relentless! Shot after shot after shot - and we started to pull away.
--
Late in the fourth quarter, it looked like we'd opened up a breathing-room lead
with a goal that pushed the score to 7-4, but it was only seconds later that
the Lancers scooped up the face-off and barreled right up the middle for a goal
that brought them back within two. We kept getting our chances, but the shots
were still just missing. The defense was playing great, but the Lancers were
pulling out all the stops. Score! Lee gets another and now it's just a one goal
lead! The final face-off must have taken a full minute while the ball bounced
crazily on the ground, before Pat Findaro finally snagged it out of the air and
took control. The Lancers defense was suddenly everywhere! With 1:30 to go
in the game, it seemed like they had an extra player. And it turned out they did ...
in a sense ... the GOALIE was running around double-teaming whoever had the ball!
--
In all my years of lacrosse, I've never seen a goalie leave the net to play
defense like that.
But the surprising move paid off and the Lancers got one last possession.
The clock seemed to drag on forever as the Lancers fired shot after shot
at the well-defended Marshall goal. Kevin Hia played great in goal, but did I mention
that it seemed like the clock wasn't moving? Wow ... go clock go!
--
A shot at
32 seconds sails high. A shot at 27 seconds goes for a save. A shot at 16 seconds
goes wide. The shot at 8 seconds misses and they call their final timeout of the game.
Oh man. The last 8 seconds seem like an eternity. Sure enough, they
get off another shot at the 5 second mark, it's saved, and the rebound sails far
enough away that our Statesmen D can swarm to the ball and smother it.
There's the horn, there's the game, Marshall wins, and our Statesmen FANS can
breathe again :-)
--
What an amazing season, and what a great way to finish. Come out Monday,
Marshall fans, for the playoff game against Langley.
Be there!

MARSHALL BEATS MADISON - SWEET!
It was a gorgeous night for Small School Big Heart lacrosse. :-)
Check out ALL THE PICTURES.
--
Jake Oster was the leading scorer with 5 goals and 2 assists. Casey Williams got
a hat trick with 3. Pat Findaro and Aria Kavyani had 2 goals apiece
(Pat got 3 assists, Aria got 2). And Senior Phil Tuttle racked up an assist.
It was truly a team effort as we really opened up the crease attack on offense -
which is really critical - and shut down the crease attack on defense - which is
even more critical. Kevin Hia was very outstanding in goal, and the whole squad
did great at clearing the ball out of the defensive end. This of course gave us
more quality scoring chances and a better time of possession (which allows the
defense to catch their breath. :-)

JV BEATS MCLEAN, VARSITY FALLS
Playing just one day after the Woodson game, our Statesmen traveled to
McLean. The Varsity fell by a score of 16-3,
but the JV improved their record on the season to five and three. The score in the
JV game was Statesmen 7, Highlanders 3.
--
This is quite a schedule that the weather has handed us. After coming back from
Spring Break and waiting for the monsoons to slip by, we're playing 5 games in
just 10 days! And the teams we're playing? Wow.
So far we've played four of the top ten teams on LAXPower's Northern Virginia Top Ten,
and the Liberty District is PACKED.
--
Two days from now we're on the field again - and this time it's the Madison game!
At home. And it's Senior night. Be there Statesmen fans!

CAVALIERS DOMINATE WEATHER-POSTPONED REMATCH
Back on April 3, the #3 Woodson Cavaliers came to Jimmy Miller Stadium
to play the Statesmen Varsity and JV sqauds. The JV got most of their game completed
before the thunderstorms hit and the tornado warning announced, but the Varsity
game was pushed off to be played another day.
--
"Another Day" turned out to be Monday (April 24), but the tornado still showed up -
this time in the form of the swarming Cavaliers offense.
--
Simply put, the Woodson offense played ball control and most of the game was spent
on our side of the field. They had about a million shots on goal (or something
like that), which means that Junior goalie Kevin Hia must have had
about 999,987 saves. (That's Kevin in the photo at left with one of
his more acrobatic saves!)
--
We tried every trick in the book, but just couldn't get the ball enough
and we only put one goal on the board. Final score was 13-1, which didn't really
show how hard-fought the game was. But it did show just how good the Cavs are.
They're ranked #3 in the NoVa region (behind just Westfield and Langley), and
man they showed why tonight. In Woodson's case, it's all about ball control.
--
Next up: travel to McLean on Tuesday.
Be there Marshall fans!

STATESMEN FALL TO #2 LANGLEY IN DOWNPOUR
On Friday night our Statesmen went on the road to take on
the #2 ranked team in the entire Northern Region.
The weather didn't exactly cooperate (OK, it absolutely poured :-),
but that did nothing to dampen the spirits of our Marshall Statesmen or of the
Statesmen faithful who braved the elements to cheer on our teams.
--
Varsity Game - Langley has a monster
offense this year, and the rain didn't slow 'em up a bit.
I don't have writeups yet, but the storyline I've been getting so far
is how hard our guys played, and the never-say-quit sense of determination.
--
(OK, I don't have the stories, but there are LOTS of pictures. :-)
That's Co-Captain Jake Oster over on the left.
--
JV Game - The JV game actually started before the rains did.
But the outcome reflected the strength of the Langley program from top to bottom.
By the time the Varsity hit the field, it didn't matter what the weather was doing.
Our squad was locked up in a terrific battle against one of the best LAX teams in
the entire state. We adjusted. We changed plans. We changed plays.
Small School Big Heart came out and played our best, but the final
score favored the Saxons.
The JV score was 12-2, the Varsity tally was 18-4.
--
These next few days are packed with lacrosse. The Varsity make-up game
against #3 Woodson is Monday. The regularly-scheduled game against McLean is Tuesday,
and then the season finale is Thursday against Madison.

TJ TAKES TWO OVER STATESMEN
According to LaxPower, Thomas Jefferson is one of the Top Ten teams
in the Virginia AAA Northern Region. And their Varsity came into Jimmy Miller
stadium - well-rested after the Spring Break and hitting on all cylinders.
--
Varsity Game - I don't have a write-up for the
Varsity contest, but the final score of 16-4 really showed
how well their offense played. Senior Casey Williams (#10 at left)
turned in a terrific offensive performance for our Statesmen, racking up
two of Marshall's four goals. Jake Oster was just everywhere (as usual :-), and
every time Pat Findaro touched the ball he really gave it up - always playing at
full speed and always willing to dive into the middle of the action.
--
Be sure to go to the Varsity pictures page ... some absolutely amazing photos tonight,
including a wonderful pipe save!
--
JV Game - I've got a few more details about the JV game, which turned out to be an
edge-of-your-seat nail-biter that showed just why lacrosse is such an amazing
sport to watch (and play). They don't call it the Fastest Sport On Two Feet
for nothin' :-)
--
The game started close and stayed close for most of the night.
Parents tell me they saw some just amazing plays on offense from
Sam Mencarini, Stephen Armstrong and Jason Cheng. (I'm pretty sure Sam led
the scoring with two, but not sure who got the other goal yet.)
--
The defense held the high-flying Colonials in check and kept the game close by
making it a low-scoring battle. Make no mistake. The TJ offense played very well,
and kept the pressure on our side of the field a lot tonight. But the Statesmen D
held up great. Taylor Delean and Chris Newcomb ran some awesome interference,
coupled with huge hits to shake the ball loose for takeaways. Goalie Craig Murphy
played solid in goal. The defense was complemented by play from Sophomore
Roman Polyakov and Freshmen Peter Embree and Collin Newcomb.
--
While we kept it close for most of the game, towards the end TJ seemed to pull out
for what looked like a commanding 3-1 lead in this low-scored slugfest. But our
Statesmen never quit, and play by play, face-off by face-off, we slowly turned
the tide. The momentum started to shift and before you know it we're just a single goal back, 3-2. Then suddenly the rally is in full gear and we score again to tie it
up in the fourth quarter! What a rally! As the clock winds down neither team
can get an advantage. There are chances for both teams, but the defenses come up
huge. Two minutes... one minute... and then with less than a minute on the clock,
the Colonials mounted one last charge. And it turned out to be the game winner ... with just
30 seconds to go!
--
You hate to see such a close game end up in the L column. But this game was just
amazing to watch and it really showed the Marshall Pride out there. Teamwork and solidarity by all the players - starters and backups every one - behind the leadership and mentoring of Coach Ohri and Coach Gehley. Leadership and teamwork have led this squad to an especially rewarding season. Marshall Pride!

RAIN AND STATESMEN PREVAIL!
In the Lee Tournament on Friday and Saturday, our Varsity
squad was only able to complete one of the three scheduled games. But that game
went very well, as our Statesmen got a well-earned Liberty District win over the
Lee Lancers, 11-3.
--
On Friday, the South Lakes game was delayed early in the first quarter due to lightning.
Marshall was down 4-0. The game resumed around 8 PM and was canceled after
just 4 more minutes due to more lightning and a large storm. The earlier
game was played with Washington-Lee a winner over Lee.
--
This morning, however, was a different story. Marshall played Lee in a steady
downpour, and our Statesmen were really fired up. We took a 2-0 lead in the first
quarter and held on for a 3-2 advantage at the half. In the third quarter the
Statesmen really picked it up and scored 7 unanswered goals to take a 10-2 lead,
and we finished up with a 11-3 victory. Jake Oster had another amazing game,
both as an offensive threat and a defensive stopper. He had 6 goals and a couple
take-aways. The defense really stepped up today after having a rough couple
outings recently. Other scores were by seniors Casey Williams (2), Aria Kavyani (1)
and Pat Findaro (2). John Chambers led the defense with several take-aways and
Kevin Hia was solid in Goal. Jake Oster and Pat Findaro had one assist each.
All players saw time on the field in this impressive win.
--
Because of the continuing rain, the second game on Saturday against
Washington-Lee was canceled. The Statesmen continue play
on Tuesday, March 18 in a make-up game against TJ (both Varsity and JV) at home.

LOTS MORE PICTURES FROM THE WOODSON JV GAME!
The JV game was stopped in the 4th quarter because of the huge
thunderstorms and tornado warning. The Varsity game was postponed completely,
and will be made up on another date.
--
In the storm-shortened opener, the JV team played a tough, tough game, but we
were basically out-gunned by a quick and well-disciplined Woodson team.
The Statesmen defensive squad put on a strong show for the first half,
combating a constant barrage of attacks and keeping the score relatively close.
But the Cavaliers proved to be a stronger team out there.
The Cavs defense played huge, and the netminder put a stop to every Statesmen
scoring chance. The shutout, even in a shortened game like this, was well-earned
by the Woodson D. The Woodson offense, on the other hand, was held in check ...
for a while. But as the game wore on, the Cavs offense got it going.
6 goals isn't a monster number, but when the defense gets a shutout, 6 goals
in a winner - and that was the final score. Cavs 6, Statesmen 0.
--
The big upside to this painful loss was that Marshall's
"little school/big heart" attitude was on display throughout - by all the players.
--
The other big upside is ... WE'VE GOT PICTURES! (And the pictures are just amazing!)
OK, so I still don't have numbers for the JV roster, so the captions are a bit
on the anonymous side :-) ... SO HERE'S THE THIRD COOL THING!

let me know
and I'll update the page to attach the name to the photo!

LOTS OF PICTURES FROM THE STONE BRIDGE GAME!
On Thursday night, the Bulldogs from Stone Bridge held off a
George-Mason-like comeback attempt by our Marshall Statesmen, and took the win by a
score of 16-8.
--
Our Statesmen returned from a long road trip to the friendly fences of Jimmy Miller stadium,
but the visitors played a terrific game and jumped out to a commanding 15-4 lead.
Our Statesmen offense has improved a lot over the past few games, but we just
couldn't keep up with that scoring pace. Still, Jake Oster led an amazing
comeback attempt - scoring four on the night and bringing us back part of the way.
As one parent put it, "he's so quick and nimble, can do so many things - just awesome."
Someone else highlighted the play of goalie Kevin Hia, who stood his ground
in the face of the Bulldog's high-pressure attack and made a lot of outstanding saves.
But the scoreboard at the end didn't lie. Stone Bridge played a terrific game
and took the 16-8 victory.
--
The leading scorer was Jake Oster with 4 goals and 1 assist. Pat Findaro was tonight's
Mr. Assist, gettings assists on 3 of our 8 goals and putting up 2 in the goals
category as well. Freshmen Matt Stonehill and Kevin Smith scored 1 goal apiece.
Ryan Jarriel and Aria Kavyani (in photo) rounded out the scoring with each getting an assist.
--
This was a Varsity-only night (Stone Bridge didn't bring a JV squad.) Both of
our squads will host the #2-ranked Cavaliers from Woodson on Monday.
These will be home games, so come on out to Jimmy Miller to watch your Statesmen
play. Marshall Pride!

JV RUNS STREAK TO 4-0!
On the road against South Lakes, the Statesmen LAX squads played
to a hard-earned split. In the opener our JV Statesmen extended their amazing winning
streak again, moving to 4-0 on the year.
In the nightcap our Varsity squad ran into that monster Seahawks offense we've been
hearing about so much this year.

(Photo caption? OK, so Coach Ohri lost his hat earlier in the game, but it sure
was nice to see him finish with a smile. :-)
--
JV Game - The JV Lacrosse Statesmen won 5-2 over the Seahawks on a damp and
drizzly night at South Lakes. We saw scores by Steven White (twice), Sam Mencarini,
and a great breakaway score by defenseman Chris Newcomb. This was a full team victory
with all our players contributing on the field. The JV Statesmen are now 4-0 on
the season.
--
Varsity Game - The Seahawks jumped out to a 5-1 lead over the Statesmen as we
opened up a dreary night at South Lakes. Marshall converted on a couple more scoring
chances, but it was the South Lakes offense that really dominated tonight.
(The Seahawks' high-flying offense has put up some monster numbers this year.
18 against Wakefield last weekend, and they even scored 7 in a loss to Herndon.)
South lakes kept up the pressure all night, and the ball was on the wrong side of the
field a lot.

Marshall scoring came from Pat Findaro (2 goals) and Aria Kavyani (1 goal). The
final score was 11-3.

JV Game - Two goals each by Sam Mencarini and JP Baker were complemented
with goals by Steven Armstrong, Buddy Stolze and Carlos Arandia. Mencarini, Armstrong
and Steven White directed an unrelenting offensive attack leading to
monopolization of the game in the second half.
--
The defense was aggressive with solid goal protection and "flashes" of
offensive flair led by Chris Newcomb, Taylor Delean, Roman Polyakov and Peter Embree.
First year goalie Craig Murphy stood strong in goal and displayed outstanding
composure and solid protection of the goal. All in all, it was a great game

JV TAKES OPENER VS. FALLS CHURCH, VARSITY FALL
The LAX season opener gave Statesmen fans some mixed results.
The JV squad won a terrific, hard-fought contest, but the Varsity fell to a
highly-regarded Falls Church squad.
--
JV Game - In the JV game, Daniel Haugh scored twice,
Jason Cheng scored once and the Statesmen began the season with a 3-1 win over the
Falls Church Jaguars.
--
Varsity Game - In the nightcap, the 8th-ranked Jags handed our Varsity an
opening loss to begin the season - in a contest that swung back and forth all game.
Indeed, Falls Church jumped out to a quick 2-0 start, but Marshall quickly
responded to make it 2-2. Just before halftime, the Jaguars closed out with an
offensive flurry to take a 4-2 into the break. The Statesmen offense
did a good job with the ball whenever it came over to the Falls Church side -
Patrick Findaro, Jake Oster and Aria Kavyani were all able to get it past the
Jags net-minder - but a lack of ground ball pick-ups made those opportunities few
and far between. Falls Church had twice as many shots on goal and probably
twice as many ground balls to control the majority of the clock.
Final score: Jaguars 8, Statesmen 5.
--
You've gotta give credit to Falls Church - they're already having a good year.
While this was Marshall's season opener, the senior-laden Jaguars already have
a 2-2 record with a win over Centreville and a couple of very near losses against
#2 Stone Bridge and #5 TC Williams.

Next week the JV takes on Lee ... at home! ... so ya gotta be there
for this one! Small school BIG HEART.
