STATESMEN LOSE IN PLAYOFFS TO TOP-SEEDED CAVS, BUT SHOW BIG IMPROVEMENTS
The final score was 19-5, but View From The Stands tells me we spent a fair amount of time on Woodson's side of the field. And more than just spending time there, we cranked up a bucket-full of shots and put five of 'em between the pipes! The last time we played this Division 6 opponent--just last Tuesday--we were shut out. Obviously, our defensemen were Always On, and responded with pride and determination. Head, Heart, Hustle ... Marshall Pride! Marshall Lacrosse!
-- THANK YOU STATESMEN FOR ALL YOU ACCOMPLISHED THIS YEAR!

SENIOR NIGHT BRINGS A FLOOD OF MEMORIES!
Click on the photo for a larger image View From The Stands tells me this was a night filled with mixed emotions. In the actual game, we were up against one of the strongest teams we've played all year ... so the scoreboard was officially Not Our Friend. But for Senior Night we were seeing the last regular-season outing for a group of six players--and three managers--who we've been with for Quite A While. In the end, the emotion that won us over was what we saw on the field: That's where we saw the type of determination, energy, heart and hustle that this team has displayed from day one. That's the character in this team. And we see it every game--from the opening tip off to the closing whistle!
-- Head. Heart. Hustle. That's Marshall Lacrosse. That's Marshall Pride.
-- OK, so the JV season ended with a loss. But this is one of those times when the 8-4 scoreboard was completely misleading. (You really should come out to the JV games--they're fun to watch and the journey these guys have taken is pretty remarkable!) The Cavaliers jumped out to a huge lead to begin the game. But after that initial push, things started to change. It was hard to see at first, and it wasn't all at once. Slowly, but steadily, View From The Stands says our players were coming into their own. Even though we were still spending most of the time on our side of the field, our defense was playing terrific lacrosse out there. We've been watching this squad improve all year, and in this game we watched them improve in the course of minutes--from one quarter to the next. By the middle of the second quarter Woodson still had their 6-0 lead, but the scoring was pretty much stopped. And we seemed to figure out that this Cavaliers team could be pressured. After the half, we turned the corner and went on offense. Big time. Suddenly, the game was being played more on their end of the field than in ours. And our shots started hitting home. In the second half we got goals from Jon Torre, Mark Bergenholtz, Ben Gentile and Alex Guerin. We definitely battled back, but not all the way. Woodson's offense added another two, so the final score was 8-4, but this was a very encouraging game for View From The Stands--the progress we've seen from this JV squad, many of whom had never played lacrosse before three months ago, was nothing short of amazing.
-- Our Varsity had a tough, tough night. Division 6 Woodson has had only one loss this year in the ultra-competitive Liberty District, and they're ranked in the top 10 for all of Northern Virginia. Sure enough, we spent almost the entire game on the Wrong Side Of The Field. Ironically, View From The Stands tells me that our Statesmen were playing really well on defense--with a huge amount of determination and energy, every minute of the game. OK, so the Woodson offense was very strong. And they got their goals--16 of 'em before the night was done. But there was also some amazing defense out there. Played by some amazing Statesmen.
-- Speaking of which, halftime saw a well-earned sendoff to a terrific group of Seniors who have given their all--to Marshall and to the Marshall LAX Program. LSM Steven Nguyen, middies Matt Chamberlin and Ben Coyle, and of course our Co-captains Michael Born (Mid), Jonathan Chambers (Def) and Taylor Delean (Def) have all been a critical part of our program. And three of our Seniors--Born, Chambers and Nguyen--have been in the program all four years. A huge note of thanks also went out to the three Senior managers who have been such a key part of our lacrosse team (and several other Marshall sports as well!): Tommy Miossi, Emily Craig and Lauren Parkhurst.
-- Oh, and the Second Annual Parent Shoot-Out? (Hehe! :-) Lacrosse balls were flyin' everywhere! View From The Stands was so busy ducking that he probably didn't get all the names right, but we think we saw Michael Born's Dad, Taylor Delean's parents, Matt Chamberlin's parents, Steven Nguyen's Dad, Ben Coyle's Mom, and Jon Chambers' Dad. The winning score was two, and I think it was a tie between Mrs. Delean and Mr. Nguyen. Trust me on this, you do not want to be in the line of fire when these parents wind up with a lacrosse stick in their hands. :-)
-- Now for next year what other skills can we add to the contest?
    Thank you Seniors!
Face-offs? (Probably not. :-) Ground balls? (OK, that would be fun. ;-) Then my own personal favorite--the poke check challenge! ... :-) ... OK maybe we'll stick with the Shoot Out. A great time was had by all!
-- Head. Heart. Hustle. Marshall Lacrosse. Thank you Seniors! THANK YOU STATESMEN!

    TWO NAILBITERS AGAINST TJ!
So it's true, our win-loss record hasn't been very pretty this year, but the level of play on the field out there has been exciting, hard-fought and always entertaining. Every game, every faceoff, every whistle--from start to finish.
-- Thursday night saw two complete nailbiters and View From The Stands was on the edge of his seat from the opening whistle of the JV game to the closing whistle of the nightcap. (Whew!)
-- The JV game set the tone for the night and the outcome, as they say, couldn't have been closer. (Literally. :-) It started out as yet another JV defensive struggle, although TJ took the opening lead. The Colonials were up 2-0 going into the second quarter, then our Statesmen closed the gap to 2-1 just before halftime. As the third quarter started, our Statesmen hit the scoreboard for another three to take a 4-3 lead. Our lead held up until the final two minutes and TJ tied it up. There was no more scoring after that and the final was a dramatic 4-4 tie! Wow! Goals were scored by Cameron Holdaway, Ryan Walter and Ben Gentile, and we saw some great goalie work out there by Carl Marquez.
-- The two Varsity squads continued the "close game" theme that was established in the JV contest, but the overall feel for the game was very different. Instead of thrashing through a hard-fought defensive struggle, the two Varsity teams lit it up and entertained the fans with a hard-fought offensive struggle.
-- The nightcap was a high-scoring affair, but when the dust settled it was TJ with a final scoring outburst that pulled the Colonials ahead with an 11-8 lead as the clock wound down to zero.
-- View From The Stands says there was lots of energy, focus and effort out there for our Statemen tonight!
-- Next week is Senior Night with the final home game of the year being the makeup game against Liberty District co-leaders Woodson. Buckle up folks, and I'm not just talking about the Second Annual Senior Parent Shoot-Out :-).

JV WINS 1-0 SHUTOUT OVER MCLEAN
A shutout??? And a one to nothing shutout? Wow! The Varsity game was pretty painful as the Highlanders offense got on track early and often, but the JV game had everyone buzzin'. (View From The Stands says the last time he remembers a 1-0 lacrosse score, it was when he was playing college ball at Delaware with wooden sticks.) (But I digress :-)
-- Well, we've told you before that this JV squad is showing remarkable improvements and here we are with a two-game winning streak!!
-- Obviously, it was a hard-fought defensive game, highlighted--on defense--by the efforts of Quan Nguyen, Kevin Malone, Alex Freedman and Ryan Walters. Our goalie, Carl Marquez had an astonishing game with a shutout. The game-winning goal was scored by Ben Gentile assisted by Marc Bergenholtz.
-- Final score on the Varsity was McLean 17-5. Final on the JV was a nothing-short-of-amazing 1-0 in favor of our Statesmen.
-- Next week should be the makeup Woodson game and TJ, but watch the schedule carefully--that Woodson game could change.

    STATESMEN EARN SPLIT AT WASHINGTON-LEE
View From The Stands says you should ALWAYS show up on time! And by "on time" we mean THE FIRST THIRTY SECONDS because that's all it took for our JV Statesmen to light up the scoreboard! Wow!
-- Is the JV squad coming along? Check this: We jumped all over the Generals in the first quarter and when the clock read 0:00, the scoreboard showed the Statesmen ahead 5-0! But then the home team righted themselves and fought hard to even things up. (Still some lessons to learn, eh? :-) At the half we still had a lead, but the 6-4 margin was pretty tense. This was a hard-hitting game and several on our team left with injuries, but we pushed through and held off a late surge on a chilly afternoon. JV goals came from Hardaway, Gentile, Newton and Guerin--finishing with the highest goal output of the year. Luke Brogan, normally a long-stick middie, filled in admirably in goal when Carl Marquez was forced to serve a penalty. Mike Withrow was credited with several assists in the game. Final score ... for the JV's second win this year ... Marshall 10, Washington-Lee 8.
-- On the Varsity, a tight defense held the Generals to the lowest goals-against for a first half this year, with the score 4-3 in Washington-Lee's favor. But the Statesmen were stymied in the second half and couldn't break through the Generals defense--scoring just one more goal for the rest of the game. We tied it up 4 all, but then late in the third quarter the Generals broke it open and we couldn't muster the offensive pressure to come back.
-- Peter Martinez had a stellar night as he erupted for his first 2 goals of the year in the first half. Kevin Smith added the other two for the Statesmen and Sam Newland was credited with an assist. The defense had 14 take-aways in the game, including 4 by Taylor Delean, but with much of the second half played in front of our net it was too much to ask.
-- The next game is away at McLean Thursday night, and then we have back-to-back games Wednesday (Woodson) and Thursday (TJ) next week to close out the regular season. Thursday is Senior Night, honoring our Seniors before the game. And YES, it will include the Second Annual Senior Parent Shoot-Out at halftime! Oh man, you DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS!

    MADISON BRINGS TOO MUCH HEAT
We hear all the time about the Liberty District being one of the strongest lacrosse districts in all of Virginia--boasting three of the Northern VA Region top ten teams. Well we found out why on Thursday when crosstown rival Madison crossed town to take us on at Jimmy Miller.
-- Oh man the 7th-ranked Warhawks are playing great lacrosse this year and the scoreboard showed it: Final for the Varsity was 18-3 and the JV tally was 13-1.
-- The lone JV score came from Cameron Holdaway. And, well, our defense got a lot of practice since we played most of the game on our end of the field. View From The Stands saw some remarkable defensive plays from Alex Freedman out there, and several blocked goals from Carl Marquez.
-- Next up is Washington-Lee on Monday the 14th. Be There!

TRIP TO SOUTH LAKES IS AN OFFENSIVE SPECTACLE
South Lakes hosted our Statesmen and wow - brought a TON of offense.
-- First the JV: What amazing progress they've made this year. Remember that over half the squad has never played lacrosse before, and yet here they are closing out this game in a ONE GOAL NAILBITER! Southlake 8 - Marshall 7. Goals for Marshall were scored by Cameron Holdaday, Ben Gentile and Alex Guerin. Great offensive and defensive hits by Quan Nguyen, Brecken Newton, and Eddie Stevenson.
-- I don't have any writeup yet on the Varsity game but it's clear from the 15-8 final score (in favor of the host Seahawks) that this was an offensive-highlights kind of game.
-- View From The Stands tells me not to be deceived--that there were some real gutty, tough-nosed plays on defense as well. It's just that the offense (both theirs AND ours) just Had It Going On. So it's Get Back Up time tonight in a tough matchup against Madison. At home. Be There!

    STONE BRIDGE CHILLS JIMMY MILLER
OUCH - Stone Bridge came into Jimmy Miller Stadium and gave us a couple of tough games ... in that special version of wet and cold that we call Spring in Northern Virginia :-).
-- It was a high-scoring affair, and there was plenty to keep View From The Stands on the edge of his very wet seat, but at the final whistle the scoreboard read 11-7 in favor of the Other Guys. The JV score was 10-2 in a game that wasn't quite so high-scoring, and yet very competitive and very physical. (Both JV goals came from Ben Gentile with Eddie Stevenson assists.)
-- Of course there's no rest for the weary ... Woodson comes to Jimmy Miller on Friday. Sure these guys are good, but I think they're gonna meet a Statesmen squad that has No Patience for anyone who makes the mistake of taking us lightly. This is gonna be a heckuva game and you should definietly Be There!

WCAC O'CONNELL OFFENSE TAKES OVER ON SATURDAY
OUCH! Chambers and Newcomb knock the ball loose from the Unlucky O'Connell attacker. Geiger stands ready in goal! If we're committed to getting better, if we want to do better is District play, there's no substitute for simply upping the level of competition. And by putting two of the DC/WCAC schools on our schedule this year we have definitely upped the level of competition. :-) We are improving and we are committed to making those improvements. And yet, View From The Stands tells me that you can see a little frustration creeping in.
-- The Knights took the JV opener in this Saturday away trip by a score of 10-4. Eddie Stevenson actually notched up the first goal of the game on a lightning-quick strike to set up what we hoped was going to be a positive tone for the final outcome. But it was a while before we got on the scoreboard again. Ben Gentile got one of those scores, and so did Alex Guerin. (I'm not sure who put in the fourth.)
-- The Varsity contest was dominated by some very skilled O'Connell players who always seemed to have a feel for where the openings were--even when the rest of Us Mortals were focusing on the loose balls and general lacrosse field mayhem :-). Final score in the Varsity game was 11-3, and we really did end up playing most of the game on their side of the field.
-- Stone Bridge is next, and this will be a real wild-card event. Stone Bridge always brings good athletes to the field, but you never know what kind of LAX that'll translate into. This is only our 3rd LAX game against the Bulldogs ever, and last year they suited up their second-strng Varsity to play the JV game (two years ago there was no JV game at all).
-- Come out and see what happens! :-)

    3/27/08 - Langley High School
    LANGLEY OVERDOGS PREVAIL
Ouch! Our Statesmen never gave up out there, and yet the perennial Liberty District overdogs from Langley knocked us around a bit and the final scoreboards (16-4 for the Varsity and 9-0 for the JV) reflected the fact that these guys are good!
-- As View From The Stands put it, This is what puts the Pain in No Pain No Gain! ... This is what puts the Get Knocked Down in Get Up Again, You're Never Gonna Keep Me Down! This was a rough one because we were coming off a good Spring Break and had hoped to stay out of the defensive end more than we did.
-- On the other hand, we're playing good teams, and our JV (like they did last year) is improving visibly. So many of the JV came ot Marshall with no LAX experience at all, and sometimes it seems like you can see improvements as they happen on the field.
-- This Saturday, the level of competition stays high. We're on the road against Bishop O'Connell--another private school from the WCAC, with a terrific lacrosse tradition.
    -- Be there Statesmen Fans!

STATESMEN HOST ST. JOHNS FROM DC/WCAC
Sam Newland gets goal #2 in his hat trick! Obviously, one of the (many) goals for this year's Statesmen lacrosse program has been to step up the level of competition that our players face in non-league play. And Saturday's schedule put us up against a strong DC private school from the highly-touted Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. St. John's went home from Jimmy Miller Stadium with a pair of Ws in the win column, but the games were close and we came out with a very good showing against a very tough program!
-- View From The Stands says our Statesmen seemed to come out slow (maybe a little wary of playing a private school for the first time in as long as anyone can remember). Our offense couldn't get anything going--we always seemed in a hurry and we'd either turn the ball over without getting a shot, or if we took the shot St. John's would get the clear and turn it around! Meanwhile, the Cadets were patient and kept the pressure on ... almost the entire first half was played in front of our own net. Despite the near-constant attack, our defense played great and we were down by only six at the break.
-- Coach Vasquez saw what was going on and made some key adjustments at the half. And maybe our players saw something as well, because the Statesmen team that came out for the second half didn't even look related to the team from the first. Brandon McCullen started the scoring for GCM with a goal in the third quarter, and then the Statesmen took over! Sam Newland scored three for a hat-tric, and Mike Born added another. Delean, Gehley and Chambers completely shut down the St. John's attack along with help from Newcomb and Nguyen, plus of course a monster effort from Junior goalie Matt Hia. Momentum was on our side and deep into the fourth quarter we'd made up almost the entire first-half deficit--trailing by just one in a 6-5 game. With just a minute to play, our Statesmen were pulling out all the stops. But with 44 seconds left on the clock, our last-ditch gambling and scrambling turned into a chance for the Cadets and they converted (spoiling our would-be second-half shutout). The final in the Varsity game was 7-5 in favor of St. John's.
-- We ran out of time in this game, but our players came away with a realization that we can play with the better teams. We'll see if this carries over into the Langley game after spring break.
-- View From The Stands didn't get as much detail on the JV game, but the overall impression is that we were out-manned in size but put up a good fight. As happened in the Varsity game, we spotted them six in the first half, but then stayed in there and never gave up. Goals were by Eddie Stevenson, Mark Bergenholtz and Ben Gentile. And we saw some great goalie work from newcomer Marquez. The final in the JV game was 7-3.
-- Our new players on the JV squad are coming on strong, and going up against quality competition helps the program for both this year and years to come. When we come back from Spring Break, we're on the road against perennial LAX powerhouse Langley.

SEASON OPENERS SHOWS HIGHS AND LOWS
Fastest sport on two feet! There's never a dull moment out on the lacrosse field this year!
-- Things had been looking really rough for the JV in the preseason. Scoreless against Herndon, and then a very tough outing in the South County scrimmage. But when Falls Church came into Jimmy Miller for the season openers, our JV went crazy! We lit 'em up for 9 goals, played like monsters on defense, protected our crease and played through a bunch of nicks and dings. (We were almost running out of middies by the end of the game! :-) Freshmen Ben Gentile and Cameron Holdaway showed a lot of leadership out there, and Ben had a great game in the offensive end--scoring six of our nine goals. It was a really nice comeback for our JV squad after the South County scrimmage, and the final score was a who-are-these-guys 9 to 1 ... Statesmen!
    -- Sweet!
-- Things were much tougher when the Varsity came out to play! Coming off a terrific double-overtime win against South County, we thought we had a bit of momentum on our side. We'd been playing good D, and the offense seemed to be coming around. But when the Jaguars hit the field, we flat out got blasted. Falls Church controlled the ball and that meant we were spending most of our time on the wrong side of the field. View From The Stands (who's seen a lot of lacrosse over the years) tells me that when the other team controls the ball like that, you tend to rush things when you finally do get the ball into their zone--and that just makes it worse.
-- We got our shots. Our Statesmen put up 5 even though the Jags played a terrific ball control game. But the constant pressure just wore us out. You can't give a good team that many chances and expect to coem away with the "W." And sure enough, Falls Church hit often enough to make the final score 11-5.
-- Saturday, the Cadets from St. Johns will travel here from DC - and you definitely don't want to miss this game! Be there Statesmen fans!

GCM TAKES PRESEASON NAILBITER IN DOUBLE OVERTIME!
After the rain shoved around our preseason schedule, we finally put on the pads against South County--and oh man, what a great night of Northern Virginia lacrosse!
-- The Varsity game started out as tight as could be, and at the halftime break our Statesmen had earned a hard-fought two-goal lead. But in the second half the Stallions came roaring back. South County went ahead and we came back to tie it up. Again, they pulled ahead. And again (just before the end of regulation), our Statesmen tied it up.
-- View From The Stands was already exhausted from sitting on the edge of his seat for so long--but little could he have imagined that the score would STILL BE TIED at the end of the first overtime! Both defenses were playing great, and that meant there was no room for error. And then there it was. In a rapidfire sequence we seemed to get our stride back and Junior middie Sam Newland blasted in the go-head goal. Double overtime and Marshall takes the win! Final score 7-6.
-- Our scoresheet showed tallies by McCullen, Chamberlin, Stonehill and Newland with the game-winner and Smith racking up three.
-- The South County JV had much better success than their Varsity did. Although the final score in this scrimmage was 10 zip in the Stallions favor, our coaches saw some encouraging developments--especially on the defensive side--as the game progressed.
-- The Statesmen season opener is on Thursday! Be there Statesmen fans!

Old Redskins park is pretty amazing. And fortunately it comes fully equipped with rain-draining Asto-turf, which meant that the lacrosse scrimmages sloshed on!
-- View From The Stands tells me it was a great start of the season. The guys look like they're really coming together as a team. (Why is it that rain and crazy-foul weather have a bonding effect like that :-) We really seem to be getting into full throttle.
-- This was one of those split-scrimmages--half of the time was spent in a controlled 6-on-6 matchup, and the other half was in game-like conditions. Because of that scrimmage format it doesn't really make sense to call it a game-type score. But as you'd guess, View From The Stands was still watching for the scores (and of course he was counting :-). Both Varsity squads put in 6 goals apiece. The JV scoring favored Herndon, 8-0.
-- Fans should realize that the JV guys are new to the sport. They're improving with every minute they're on the field, and their enthusiasm and excitement is entirely fun to watch.
-- Be there on Tuesday for the South County scrimmages! Marshall Pride!
